I have bought two new hutches for my girls and was thinking about using fleece in them. Daisy nibbled an inch wide hole right through a blanket in minutes once. I was wondering if she would eat the fleece too, I think she thought the loose strings on the blanket were grass. If she eats too much fleece before I notice will it make her sick? Help please :{ Rachel

Piggies don't normally nibble fleece, though they always pull at loose threads or edging threads. Fleece is made from recycled plastic, so it is totally safe to eat as far as digestion is concerned, it will simply pass straight through.

I use fleece after learning about it on this site, and I find it very nice on their feet. I do wash it every other day though, and there's newspaper underneath to soak up the wee as that goes straight through the fleece.

Hope this helps, Sarah

you learn some thing new every day i did not know it was recycle plastic mine do not touch theres

I have to say that I tried vetbed which may not be fleece (hopefully some members will help me here) and it just wasn't for me. The piggies loved it but it was very heavy when wet and my husband threatened to divorce me if I put in the washing machine and it broke down.

If you mean fleece as in a fleece like towel, then I do use that when I have a poorly pig or one who has just had surgery.

I have recently started using fleece and so far so good, my girls seem to like it, I'm happier because i was using sawdust/wood shavings which i learnt here that its not good for them.
They dont chew it as far as i can see. I line the bottom with paper, then 2 towels and then the fleese on top. I spot clean twice a day cos it is so easy on fleece and change the whole lot every 3 days.

Thanks I'll try them with it. I use paper cat litter at the moment and it is quite expensive. Hope they don't eat it too much though or it will cost me just as much to replace the fleece lol :) Rachel

Mine don't eat it, but they pull at it occassionally to crawl underneath! rolleyes

They've just recently discovered that they could, it was my fault; I forgot to put their huts back in for about 15 minutes and that was the only place they could find to hide....and now they won't stop it! :))

Maybe you could try newspaper & hay? its much warmer and softer and holds the smell a little better than fleece IMO,i only converted to fleece recently because OH couldnt handle so much hay in the house due to allergys other than that it was great x

I use fleace and newspaper also, marvin and chocco have great fun crawling underneith, but i have discovered the fantastic use of clothes pegs and thwarted their evil plans!

I never even thought about using fleece in their bedding untill i have seen a lot of you pics with fleece in the cages.
Do piggies prefer it and how often do you need to change it?
My 4 piggies spread sawdust everywher when they run riound the cage so it seems like a good idea! can you use any fleece? and also what happens to it when they wee, dont they lie in it and get wet?!
x

Fleece isn't absorbant as such, the wet goes through and ends up underneath. Some use newspaper, some use towels to actually soak up the wet. I change mine every other day, some change every three days. I prefer fleece because they don't get wet, they have 'better' looking feet, and it is so much less messy! They like to sprawl out on it.

I change mine every week just because mine tend to use their litter boxes primarily. I do have one cage, however, that uses both the litter box and the floor so I change them based on how icky it looks underneath, usually every 4 to 5 days.

Ah this sounds like it could cut down on the mess considerably....its like a never ending battle with the hoover and sawdust! Do you use a a normal fleece like the type you could buy from ikea for instance, also do you not get static from it?
**** How did you make your piggies use a litter box?! ****
x

None of my pigs eat it BUT the little brats do move the edges out and poop under it! Mostly my foster boys and pickle do that (must be a guy thing lol). I personally buy puppy pads and a 2X4 c&c need about six, now in saying that I only have to remove 4 of thoses ever 3 days or so. Usually the outer four. And I wouldn't worry about it being eaten, it just passes threw.

I have these Rubber balls that for some reason cut the static out. As for the ikea ones I don't know as I haven't used them.

I was still gonna use newspaper, paper cat litter and hay in the bedroom but fleece in the other rooms. This is partly cuz it will hopefully be easier to clean and cheaper than all that paper cat litter I have to buy at the minute. He he he going to go fleece shopping tomorrow

maybe its a good idea to try some fleece? sawdust is known for causing respiratory problems in most small animals x

I have never been to Ikea....we're not populated enough, I guess! :)) A hobby store or fabric store has many kinds and you can pick a pattern that you like or that fits your piggies' personalities!

As far as litter training, my personal experience:
Get a small animal litter corner litter box.
Notice where they use the bathroom the most (which corner)
Put Newspaper and or a puppy pad (I use both), cut to fit in the bottom - I think some people's pigs tend to eat these, but I do not have that problem at all
Top with hay
Put hay in a hay rack or give them small piles outside of their box
Change daily.

i have been using fleece for about a week now!
they do llike it and quite frequently i do find them burrowing under it!
However this poo issue is concerning me! they do not all poo in one place, infact completely the opposite! the little darlings poo everywhere, which is meaning i am cleaning their cage once in the morning and evening!
Does everyone else using fleece have to do this?
Any ideas on how i can reduce it? I guess the best thing about using saw dust is that you definatly dont notice all the poo!
x

I use a small dustpan and brush and do a poo patrol every morning when they get their veggies, when i get home, and then before i got to bed.

You soon get into the routine and only takes a few minutes tops. Marvin loves it when the brush is ouf and popcorns continuously.....think he thinks the brush is his grilfriend.

i got some fleece from asda today its brown and its 122x152cm and only cost me £2.00 so i am going to give it a try see how it goes because you/most of you use it and say it good so i'm going to give it a try.cheers kelly.:)

I am umming and ahhing about fleece as weirdly enough i am ok with straw and hay but sawdust and shavings make me sneeze so currently they are on chopped straw but they have taken to eating and playing with the newspaper underneath. They also like to throw their food all over the place.

Hehe i got that to i also just started a thread:))

i started using fleece as well...yes there are poops everywhere like some of you say...mine dont just do it in one place...but i have noticed Most of it near their food...so i am going this weekend to buy something for a small litter box and hay rack. Should also be able to finish their second level/ramp.
I use a small broom and dust pan and clean out poops every other night...i dont mind it a bit because i know they LOVEx) the fleece and I can get the poops out easier this way....hay just let it fall to the bottom and i thought it was a bit unsanitary...i might just be a Picky mom! :(|);):(|):<>:<>

That's what I've done with mine. It works really well!

They tend to poop everywhere but the litter box but most of their pee tends to be in there...Which I find to be worse than poop :))

Did your piggies go absolutely crazy on the first day of using fleece?
I thought mine were going to popcorn right out of the cage, it was hilarious xx>>>

I use fleece and love it x)

Yes mine poop every where, little monsters :)) and i have a very small dust pan and brush set which i use to clean up any poop and spilled food so its very easy once you get the know how

YES! They thought they were in the highest priced hotel jumping on the bed! LOL and to see Molly just lay out all comfy and relaxed...it is worth 'seeing' all the poops.
