Changed my cages today from shavings (i know, learning everything from this forum) to fleece. Lined the cages with newspaper, put puppy pads on top, then fleece. What a joy! :)) My girls were popcorning so much it was unbelievable! Hope the pads absorb the urine ok as they all love it. What a difference! Very happy mum and pigs tonight! :))

:)) cool! I also do the same with puppy pads under the fleece!

Mine use one corner so much I actually cut out a 1/4 of the pad and lay it in the corner on top of the base (so basically a double layer) and change that daily and everything else twice a week, since they use the same corner over and over.

I love fleece, the patterns are so cute and you can pick them to match your piggies' personalities! :(|)

is it just my pigs then because i have bought them some new fleese but werever i put it they wee on it i put it in their cabin they soaked it so i took it out and put it in there bed so they changed from weeing in the cabin and weed in the bed they seem to prefer hay to lie on x

where can i buy fleece from?

what does pop corning mean? lol
my 2 girls keep on jumping around on wood shavings is that normal? lol

fleece can be brought from craft, sewing shops or ebay
Popcorning is what piggies do when they are happy it looks like jumping or slightly flicking there bottom up in the air and also is usually accompanied with darting around fast, give them a big pile of hay to play in and i guarantee you will see more of this;)

haha oook i wondered why they were doing this,

when they had lice i thought it was because of them lol
thanks for the info :)

might have to do that :)

do i just type in fleece on ebay?

I have fleece for sale! please got to the For Sale Thread for details!

Well it's been a few days now since i changed to fleece, and i'm not so sure it's working out. :( Any advice or tips that anyone has would be great as i don't want to change back. Basically, the problem is, it smells. Made the cages up on Monday, changed it on Wednesday, again on Thursday and i'm goin to change again later cause i can smell it. Have newspaper then puppy pads underneath. Is this normal with fleece?

One other thing, 2 of my boys keep pullin back the edges, exposin the underneath, know this is not much of an issue but i like to keep the cages nice and if they are pullin it back they then end up lyin on the paper and pads. :( Any tips on the smell or keepin the fleece in place would be great :)

Thank you xx

hello as for smell i dont know,my piggie that that fleece doesnt smell much with it,i had the problem of my piggy pulling up the edges so i put things like bowls in one corner a wooden hidey in the other, just something in each corner so they couldn pull it up,maybey you could attach velcro to underneath the fleece and then to the cage so that it can't be pulled up

i can't remember if your the member i posted to a while ago that is allergic to hay but if your not the best smelling most fun solution i have is layered newspaper and then lots of hay ontop x

Thank you :)

Have put some stuff in the corners, they move it! :)) Could consider velcro though. It might be worse with the smell because i have 5 in my living room, but didn't get it before with the shavings.

No it wasn't me that was allergic to hay, so do you just have paper on the floor then lots of hay? Does the paper not get wet very quickly? xx

i find that the paper stays fairly dry, and if it does get wet then they are walking on the hay thats on top anyway, yes i have newspaper then hay and lots of it i will show you in a second, the hay seems to absorb the smell.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but how big are the cages and how many piggies are in them? Towels may be a better solution than puppy pads underneath the fleece, towels absorb much more and you can spray them each day with a light disinfectant to prevent smells. Is the fleece wicking the pee down so that the surface is not wet?

Aaah i see! Thank you.

**** is i have two 4 x 2 c&c cages and a smaller cage, which looks similiar to the one in your pic, so that's an awful lot of hay to cover the cage. :)) xx

Hi there,

Two 4 x 2 c&c cages, pair of boars and a pair of sows in each and one shop bought cage with a single boar in it.

I'm not sure that it is, fleece is not wet, but there are some slightly damp patches when i remove it which i also wasn't happy about. xx

I found with vet bed and two boars it was very smelly in 1 to 2 days in a nero 4 which is about 4 by 1/2 of the C&C grids. I now have a single boar in two cages this size and one on vetbed and one on fleece I find if you sweep daily and put newspaper underneath which you also change daily the smell isn't that noticable but still have to change the fleece in 3/4 days but vetbed lasts a week!

When I had them together I solved the smell by having their houses in cat litter trays with carefresh in them ontop of the vetbed so it was fine but did have to buy carefresh but smaller quantities than if I had to fill the whole cage!

when i had the vet bed i found it good for the first few hours, but my piggie pee's alotttttt, and it would smell pretty quickly and hold alot of the wee too in one corner. also i found with the vet bed, it is not possible to get all the hay or poo off it and when * wash it your machine will smell alot from the wee. plus you will be cleaning out your washing machine from debris at the end fo the wash. I changed back to fleece myself bought 5 fleece blankets (in PINK) in dunnes for 15 euro altogether - then bought a pack of 30 puppy pads for 12 euro (use 1 a day) and i put newspaper underneat. I have found that if i take just 10 mins a day and change her cage out completely, we are talking about absolutely no smell in the room at all, i have her indoors, so we'd notice the smallest wiff. I change her fleece and clean the cage proper daily - it takes me all of 10 mins max and also i put the fleece in a bag and wait til i have 2 to wash together to not waste putting a wash on too often. I found when i was lookin after her before and only changing the cage weekly the smell would be there by day 2 or 3 and i'd be taking ages to clear her cage at the weekend, specially with the vet bed. I love the fleece, plus she lovessssss the PINK, haha.. Oh but she's starting to nibble at the puppy pads under neat so i'm tryin to teach her (NO).... but its not going through haha

Just noticed this in the thread now.. my piggie does this all the time, she did it with the vet bed, she does it with her fleece and she did it with the hay and paper, they're jst curious little things, I am going to look for a kind of grip thing that i can put down from outside that will cover the corners - i cant put down her bowls in them, cos if i do.. she'll pee in them, the corners are her peeing area.. funny thing is, she'll pee in the corner, then lift it up and start friggin nibbling the puppy pad that has pee in it.. ewww. No manners at all she doesnt.. haha
