I want to switch over to fleece as soon as possible and I'm gathering my supplies. Do you suggest wearing the items in the cage such as towels and U-Haul pads underneath a layer of fleece or do you suggest making actual pads with uhal pads in between fleece that fits the cage thanks so much and advance

I also use fleece and simply put a generous layer of newspaper underneath (I have a pretty much unlimited supply as my family hoards old newspapers for the fire place) others suggest towels (though this requires more laundering). From what I've read even those with fit to cage liners that do include absorbent material still put a layer of something underneath. So it really is up to you! Perhaps try fleece with a layer underneath and if you think that's not working then look into cage liners :)

:agr:
In the short term the easiest thing would probably be to use fleece, and place your absorbent layers underneath (towels, puppy pads, etc).
Or buy one liner and see which method you prefer?

i use puppy training pads, then generous layer of newspaper and then the fleece, works fine :)

I bought cloth diapers and use fleece over top. I want to make linings but I have 2 large cages so the amount of them overwhelms me and I just use the peices seperate. Works great though!

When prepping the fleece I know that you have to wash it 4 to 6 times. Do you wash and dry all six times or just wash six times and then dry

I used to wash and dry each time but lately I've washed 3 x then dried and checked it and it's been good

I have wash seven times and dried for the times. The water is still mostly pulling on top. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. This is blizzard fleece bar at Joannes fabric

Try washing with bleach. Also add a little Dawn dish soap to the wash.
No fabric softener.
tried that. Still not working. I will try one more wash with breech again. This will be 9th wash and 6th dry. I don't know what else to do. :( I want to get fleece in before piggy gives birth

Hmm maybe fabric softener has made things strange I use tide and usually it works great and hot wash water

I have not used any fabric softener. I'm wondering if maybe I bought the wrong fleece. Am I wrong in thinking that blizzard fleece works OK with this process

Try adding white vinegar to the wash. And don't use too much soap/detergent. Hope this works. (I'm not sure what "blizzard fleece" is. But it's mostly anti pill fleece that's normally used)

Are you putting the fleece on something absorbent to check it is working? You need an absorbent layer to pull the wetness through the fleece.

I love JoAnn's blizzard fleece. It works really well for me.

Have you used fabric softener or dryer sheet with your own clothes? If you did, they might have left some residue on the machine.

Did you wash with the hottest setting?

I seem to remember having a problem when i first started out with waterproof fleece! Some fleece just seems to be that way no matter what you try.
i had good success with a couple of old fleece baby blankets and then ordered a good one to fit my cage online somewhere.

I don't use any newspaper. For my large downstairs area, i find pampers bed mats best. Amazon sell them. 2 will cover the area of a 5×2 cage. My pigs seem to urinate mainly in one area which means one of the mats will last a few changes as it hardly gets wet. These mats are super absorbant, much more than puppy pads.

For my hayloft and outdoor hutch, i do use puppy pads. Just from poundstretcher. They do the job ok but need changing more frequently than the bed mats.

I still find just mats and fleece fine though without newspaper. And i don't think there's a smell. . .

I may try these pampers bed mats instead of puppy pads. Thanks for the idea.

I was putting on a towel. Thank you all for the advice. I tried one more time with bleach and it worked finally. Piggies are all set up and loving the fleece. Lots of popcorning from the little one and momma is purring away <3

a lady i know makes all kinds of fleece items for piggies and ships to most countries, the US and canada included i believe :)
