Hi guys, I really need help wicking my fleece.. I have washed it all three times with some cheap Sainsburys own brand detergent (I figured if it was cheap, it wouldn't have any fabric softener) I'm sure it doesn't have any. It's driving me insane, the water just sits on top and doesn't go anywhere :( I have seen people online washing it with white vinegar - will this work? Also if I did use white vinegar, do I only need it to wick the fleece, or do I need to use it when I wash my fleece? I need lots of help. Please feel free to dumb it down and add as much detail as possible lol.

You need polar fleece as other fleeces do not wick. If it is micro fleece or the soft fluffy fleece (cant think of the name) it wont ever wick. What fleece are you using?

Just looked up the sainsbury s liquid that is the culprit it has optical whiteners I read a thread on here before they stop it wicking. Try fairy non bio that works well

I stood in asda one day and looked at all of the washing powders and I could not find one that did not have optical brighteners in them. I just use Asda's smart price powder for my fleece, it does have optical brighteners but I don't have a problem with wicking.

I have no idea what kind of fleece it is - how do I know? I just picked it up at Tiger - it's 100% polyester. I didn't know anything about 'optical brighteners' either. Thanks for the advice, I'll head over to Asda's later this week.

Sorry lol, Tiger is a shop like.. kind of like the 'extras' area in Ikea where you buy random bits and accessories for your house. Fleece is like a fiver each there. Also how soft is 'very' soft? Lol, 'cause I always thought fleece was soft generally..? I am confused lol.

Lol! I know exactly what you mean - my fleece was both cheap and really soft so I also have no idea what the difference is between polar and micro. I wonder if it anything to do with the 'fluffiness'. My stuff is quite thin and not as thick or fluffy as my fleecy dressing gown!

I'm just making it all up now! :flag:

My fleece isnt wicking either and i am very confused ......i used tescos non bio liquid. Dont know if the problem is my washing liquid or the fleece! Mine are the cheap fleeces from poundland which are sold in the pet section. Are they too thin?

Some of these fleeces are coated to prevent wicking. My Mother ran an outdoor clothing shop for many years. The best way to get rid of these treatments is to use biological detergent for a few washes to get rid of them.

Once in use with pigs I would only use non bio, but it might work to get them wicking in the first place. That why u never use bio on your fleece jackets, it melts taped seam and washes out waterproofing in the fleece.

This is fabulous information, thank you very much. I'll buy myself some bio this week and give it a shot.

No they should be fine you need to wash 3 times before use. I generally do the first go at 60degrees then 2 40 degree washes. I use fairy with no problems

Thanks for all the advice guys - I think I'll pay a visit to Asda first and try the 60 degree then 2 40 degree washes and see if that does anything before trying out Fairy as I'm very strapped for cash (hence why I wanted to move to fleece anyway...) Thanks again :)
