and please say why? I am just considering aprt of the CC cage to be filled with vet bed.... I like vet bed but have never tried it with piggies, but I know lots of people like fleece too, I use megazorb and like that but wondered if seth an Norm would like to try vet bed.. I really don't want anything to smell too bad fast though....I thought puppy pad underneath vet bed?
advice plz people... ;)

I don't have a CC cage so I can't say whether the benefits that I find will apply to you, but I use vet bed and love it! I tried fleece with my two cages and just couldn't get on with it. I used layers of newspaper, towels and fleece but found that it still smelt awful and I had to change it every day. My boys also didn't seem to like it much. They would tear at it and pull it up in order to crawl underneath it. Saying that though, a lot of piggy owners swear by it.

Personally, I've never switch from vet bed. It's lovely and soft and always results in lots of happy, popcorning piggies when I put in one fresh from the washing machine. It dries in a few hours without needing a tumble dryer. As its quite thick my pigs can't pull it up from the sides and so don't seem to bother to try. I change it every 4th day, but this is more out of habit and it could actually go a day or two longer without needing to be washed.

Hope that helps!

Definite vote for vet bed here. I used fleece briefly in the hutch and it got manky really quickly, plus I hated the way it rucked up.

Fleece is a heck of a lot easier to get in the washing machine though! :))

I much preferred vet bed to fleece, although have to say that we have now changed to hay for Harry and Ron, and finacard for Eddie and Alfie, and find that better than vetbed.

Well - I am very new to indoor cages and have never used vet bed - what is puzzling me though is why those of you that don't like fleece have tried it with layers of towels and newspaper? Surely that defeats the whole purpose of what makes it so easy to use?!

I have a C and C cage (or should I say C O for cubes only!) The corex is still in the shed and I am not quite seeing the point of it either as my cage is on the floor.

All I have is a fleece which sits on pampers bed mats (2 mats laid next to each other are big enough for the 6x2 cage) and this is on a lino floor.

The pampers mats can stay down a good 2 weeks. When I change the pampers mats, the floor appears to be totally bone dry underneath and not at all smelly but I do give it a good mopping with disinfectant just for peace of mind.

So - all I really do every day is remove the fleece, shake the poo off and then replace the fleece (10 min job)

I change the fleece every 3 or 4 days (but it's not smelly at all as all the urine has been absorbed into the pampers bed mats)

The fleece goes on a 60 degree wash in my machine on the quick wash cycle and dries very quickly.

I do have 2 litter trays in the cage and my piggies do use them a lot - but they do wee on the fleece too. They don't attempt to burrow under the fleece, but they wouldn't be able too as the edges of it all extend just outside the cage.

It's probably not all that comfy as it is just a single layer of fleece on a bed mat (thin) but they do have a guinea pig bed each which they love to sleep on so they should be comfy enough I hope!

They do a lots of popcorning too so I take it they are happy enough!

Vet bed all the way for me :))
It just makes life so much easier for us as we have 18 piggies so the six pens they live in are hoovered thoroughly twice a day to get hay and poops off. Keeps the piggies warm 24/7, is nice under their little feet and on deep cleaning days, the pieces are rolled up after hoovering and washed then hung up, dry in a day. Rolls can be cut to size as our pens are all 6ft+ and it stays in place and I tuck it up around 4" at the front and back to keep any draughts out so know they are snug and toastie :x
Downside is the amount I have to wash to keep a clean supply and storage but we have a small utility room and my OH put deep shelves and hanging space up for me.
Vet bed can initially sound expensive but if people shop around on ebay, there are some good prices - I buy rolls of 5 or 10m.
Plus side is it keeps the piggies dry as it wicks the wee away so they're not lying on wet bedding and can leave pairs/trios of piggies for a week between changes, lots of lovely colours available but most important, our piggies love it.
Coincidentally, I've not had any illness from a piggy since switching to vet bed, I used a small piece last year when one of my boys was ill to maintain his body heat and decided then it was the best thing and switched to kitting the whole pens with it.

I have finally got round to liking fleece since we made a box for the hay, and they love burrowing in the hay and it doesn't go on the fleece anymore. I think the fleece is so much softer on their pads, less chance on mites from, and I would not have spotted a small bit of white, which since googling is calcium and so have bought a Brita water jug and watched their calcium foods now.

started using vet bed a few days ago and I love it! xoxo
