When you wash your fleece and towels etc, do you wash them with detergent alone? Not softner? x

Fairy detergent, like gel or powder? (Fairy also do a softener aswell)

With my piggies i just have a towel and a fleece on top, they get poop scooped every day or two and wash the fleeces about every 5 days, and i never really have an issue with smell,

Did you pre wash your fleece 3 times to get rid of the top layer so water could pass through etc. ?

They were was loads before I used them... Guess its just me no one else says it smells x x

I have started using a really cheap washing powder, asda smart price, I have found that the fleeces and towels are a lot more absorbent, I think that it may contain less softener. I did a test on my fleeces by inviting a non animally person into my flat after 7 days of just poop scooping and they didnt notice the smell of guinea pigs and I had to point out to her how may I had. :)) (they did complained about me keeping my snake in the kitchen :p )

i use a materess topper under my fleece and it doesnt smell but when i use towels and fleece it gets smelly quickly

i also use a hay tray (cat litter tray) and as my piggies tend to only wee on there hay it saves alot of the wee going on the fleece and stops the smell

My fleece set up is similar to Hollies. I use a "boot tray" under my hay rack. Then on them i use a pillow protector topped with a pillowcase. I change this everyday. I have also made pads with fleece and wadding for under the beds. I change these every other day. I ony have to chance the whole cage once a week then and the smell ia still minimal.
The boot tray was £1.49 from B&M's. They are about the same size as growbag trays but the sides are a little lower.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I think its just me that thinks it smells I have a very weak stomach from been on dyalsis so I think every thing smells ! Xx

Is it boys you have? They can be smellier than girls anyway. Though i have never noticed this, i have a group of 4, 3 girls and a nuetered boar and never notice his smell over theirs?

Hello,
I have recently switched to using fleece for my 3 piggies, too.
When I use towels under fleece mine smells after a day, regardless of how often I sweep up the poos.
However, recently I bought one of these http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1274581/Trail/searchtext>MATRESS+TOPPER.htm and since sewing fleece around this to make a cage liner, the cage takes a lot longer to get smelly.

Thats what I use. They are really good for the price at the moment. Its easy to trim the elasticated edge off too.

I found it helped when I put litter trays in that I can empty more frequently. They don't use them 100%, but it has reduced the smell.

So do you cut the mattress toppers to fit your 'pen' and then sew fleece to them?

Exactly that, yes. With the fleece covering the front, back and sides so that the topper is completely covered. I did mine by hand and it took a while as I'm not a great sewer but with a sewing machine it would be very quick! :)

i really dont see the point of fleece, id be scared of ditto eating it he eats my furry throw that i have on my sofa? I used simple old wood shavings and have never had issue with them, i feel they dont smell unless obviously left days on end. I suspect fleece would smell... If a human were to wet there bed the parent strips and changes the bedding, i dont think fleece is hygienic personally but thats just my opinion..i use newspaper with a thick layer of wood shavings on top and hay in his sleeping compartment... And i clean him out every 3 days... I hope my post doesnt offend anyone it is afteral just my opinion.. I bred rabbits years ago ans have always used wood shavings for both them and guineapigs without issue .

It's weird, a lot of people who are new to fleece say that it smells more than when on sawdust. When I changed my girls over it had the opposite effect! They used to smell a bit when on Megazorb now they are odour free and their cage never smells. I just machine wash it every two days poop scoop once or twice a day and put towels and newspaper underneath the fleece.

Thank you, that is really helpful. I have been to Jysk today and stocked up on fleeces which are now in the (first) wash, along with the incredibly cheap towels they also had, and a cheap mattress protector too.
We are just putting our C and C together for indoors and the outside play run is all ready. And when we are back from our holiday next week, we will be getting our girls. We are getting a little excited :<>

hi!
I do fleece on top, two layers of towels under neath. Did you wash your fleece 3-4 times before laying it down? You have to wash it to wick up.
