Hi, I recently changed from using wood shavings and hay in my girl's hutch to using fleece as I was fed up of sweeping up shavings from all over! They both seem just as happy to be on fleece but when I got poppy out today she did seem a little smelly! The fleece didn't feel wet anywhere and I am washing it every 2 or 3 days.
Just wondering if anyone else had noticed smellier pigs on fleece? Could just be that she pees in her cosy and then sleeps in it! She's always done that though. Should I go back to endless shavings sweeping?

i have too but i have 8 boys who love to mark there bit of the cage with their scent lol. dont know whether the girly pigs do something similar.

Yes, I'm not sure whether girls do that. We've only had them about a month. Would rather be constantly sweeping than have stinkers though!

I was wondering this too.....
I have just changed to fleece and I have noticed that my girls smell! I too change it every 2-3 days and wash all there cosy's ect
Don't think I could cope with sawdust in there new c&c cage it's massive ! Xx

Mine are outside so the mess isn't too bad with shavings, it's just bad on a windy day and the kids walk it all over the house!

My pigs and buns are in a shed in their hutches so that cuts down on the shavings blowing everywhere. On a windy day I just close the door behind me and its all self contained so no mess. ;)

That sounds good highwayman, wonder whether the kids would mind the piggies taking over their playhouse. Do they not miss natural light being in a shed?

Do you have towels under the fleece? Mine are on a layer of towels and once of fleece and they never smell. I wish I could think of a solution.

I have washable incontinence pads under the fleece and then newspaper under that. The newspaper pretty much stays dry. Am wondering if I can stop them peeing in their cosies.

Mine wee in their beds and cosies. I just wash them with their bedding. I do not think it is possible to stop that. They are just not interested in moving when they need the loo!

Ive got 10 pigs in total, all are on fleece and washable bed pads underneath. My longer haired boys can get a bit wiffy from time to time (but is sorted with a quick bath every 4-6wks). All my girls smell lovely - they smell just like a bale of fresh hay x)

Ive been using fleece for 12+months and wouldn't use anything else, i hoover their cages every day and they get fully cleaned out every 4th day!

Yes, mine go in the wash every couple of days with the bedding too. Lazy devils!
Someone needs to invent little piggy pampers to save all the trouble!

I wonder why mine are stinky then. I get rid of the poops at least once a day and am fully cleaning them out every couple of days. Maybe they could come and stay at Aunty sodapop's house to learn a lesson or two about personal hygiene!

I leave the door open all day so the get plenty of daylight. ;)

Good plan highwayman! Looking at my cage my girlies don't get that much light either. May have to think about moving them and going back to shavings. Can't be doing with them smelling!

mine are on fleece and hadnt noticed them smelling, but I started off with fleece so have nothing to compare with and thats the herd of 4 and the boys pair.

My family don't think they smell. I have unfortunately been blessed with a very strong sense of smell. Maybe I will just get a peg for my nose. I am preferring using fleece as it is much tidier and my piggies seem to like it.

lol - i dont think any of mine know anything about personal hygiene, ive still got some naughty piggies that enjoy pooping in the food bowl :{

Have you tried putting their hay in hay racks with a simple cat litter tray underneath? You'd be surprised at just how much they wee & poop when eating - my trays are filled with a layer of wood-shavings then hay on top and they get cleaned out the same time as a full cage clean - without my litter trays their cages would be much worse :p

They have a hay rack but I couldn't fit a cat tray in their eating part of the cage. They have 2 cages joined together, they sleep in one side and the other is a double decker kind of cage so the ramp hole takes up a lot of space in their eating bit. Maybe I will go back to shavings in their eating cage.

I don't notice my piggies ever smelling and they're on fleece, they smelt more on megazorb. First of all do you put anything underneath the fleece? Because fleece alone is not enough, fleece acts as a wicking material as all liquid passes through so the fleece always stays dry, put towels underneath and then underneath that a layer of newspaper. Also if I were you I'd clean their fleece every 2 days and I would clean the poo's from their cage about 2 times a day so it doesn't get smelly.

They have mattress protector things under the fleece and then newspaper. Maybe I'll give towels a go.

When the weather is nice, I leave their hutch door open, put their steps up and let them do their own thing.
