I have added grids to the front of the boys cage to make a run - I have also managed to get some correx of freecycle so have got it all set up.

I had been using an old picnic rug inside the grids but realised it wouldn't stand up to much washing ! The boys do most of the wees in the cage but obviously there is some in the run.

At the moment I have a couple of pampers bed protectors left over from when the children were tiny, with fleece on top.

Am trying to decide what to use they these need thrown out, I think the options are puppy training pads (or similar), Towels or cotton mattress protectors.

What are the advantages of each of them and is there any others I should be thinking of ?

Thanks
Andrea

Towels.

This is what i personally use and although i love it, having it seperate can be dificult in my cage as some corners are a bit hard to reach, however, i've never had an issue with smell and i find that they're good absorbency and easy to find in a range of sizes to fit the cage. For example hand towels for upper levels etc.

Bonuses
Reusable means lower cost.
Come in range of sizes.
Easy to plonk in if right size.
Can be stitched to make liner.
Can use old towels (saves buying new)

Downsides:
Adds to the washing load.

Using Puppy Training Pads.

I've never tried this myself but i probably never would as it's just another regular cost i'd rather do without !

Bonuses:
Easy to just pick up and throw out as well as just plonk in to the cage, this makes the cleaning process is quicker.

Downsides:
More expensive especially in a larger cage.

Mattress protectors.

This is something i've looked at and quite like the idea of myself but have never tried.

Bonuses:
Reusable.
Can be fairly cheap.
Easy to make into a liner.

Downsides:
Once again more washing.
Limited size range (can be cut up though.)

With things like towels, some people like to use newspaper underneath however i find it a waste of time as they never seemed to collect any moisture and always looked just as clean as when i put them in!
The setting up cost is obviously a bit expensive, having to go out and buy the mattress protectors or the towels, and having to buy more than one for a clean set during changing, but obviously this isn't a regular expense so it's not too bad.

Hope that helps ! (:
