Hi. I'm due to collect my piggy babies in April and at the minute I'm just trying to get their cage ready and all the things they'll need. Ive got just an ordinary cage but I'm thinking about using fleece as it looks so much prettier.
The thing is I'm a bit confused, is it any fleece you can use? Just like a fleece pet blanket from the pet shop? or does it have to be a special kind? Also what would I put under it? I've heard some people put newspaper, puppy pads, a towel then the fleece? Have I got the correct idea? lol. Oh and one last thing, how would I litter train them?

Sorry to be a nuisance newbie haha

I have litter trays with newspaper then finacard shredded cardboard ) then hay.I just pegged a cover over and that is where they do most of their wees.I have incontinence pads then main fleece then towels and fleece where they wee now and then. The smaller pieces get changed when wet and main fleece and any weed on pads once a week.I get my fleeces from b&m.They do a pack of two for 3.99 size 150x120 in plain bright colours. You wash them three times without powder to make them wick. They also do pet ones but I think they are dearer and not as thick. Some people use vented which sounds really good but too expensive for me as I have large enclosures

Hi there. I use a layer of towels and two of fleece. Fleece needs to be 100% polyester. You need to wash and dry it at 60 degrees three times before use so it wicks away water. Only use soap powder without fabric conditioner as it stops it wicking away water.

Just to let you know the minimum cage size for two guinea pigs is 60 by 120 cm. Most ready made cages are too small.

I have never manages to litter train a guinea pig. It is natural for them to toilet anywhere they feel comfortable so do not worry about that.

Fleece and towels need to be washed every three days. You will need to remove poops two or three times a day.

Thanks for the advice. The cage I have is 120 x 60cm. I did want a c&c but as I have a dog and a 2 year old toddler I thought I'd best be on the safe side and get something more secure.

Does anyone know where I can get patterned fleece from? At a reasonable price! I've seen so many cages with lovely bright patterned fleece, it's so pretty.
Also should I buy the anti-pill fleece?

You can buy fleece from primary,IKEA,supermarkets, home bargains,b and m.

Just be sure to wash the fleece a few times to help it wick, otherwise the wee will sit on top. I use fleece with puppy pads underneath. I also use litter trays with hay.

Yes I'll make sure I do that. I'm going to use puppy pads aswel. Is it easy getting them to toilet in the litter trays?

After more than 16 years of trying I've only Had one who came close to being litter trained. But they do seem to pee more in their trays and anywhere under cover (igloos)

I use puppy pads, then towels then fleece. B&M is great for the puppy pads and fleece as its cheap and the fleece is in nice colours, I think its 2 for £3.99. They are plain colours but I use soaker pads and lap pads in my cage to decorate and add design to it. as for litter training, I tried a litter tray in my cage - piggies do use it quite a bit, but they are by no means litter trained. I have bought a corner curtain though from a piggie website and they do tend to go behind that more than anywhere else so its maybe worth a try? it only cost a fiver and I just put a lap pad under the corner so i can just lift it out and shake it and change it regularly :)
