As I am near the end of my wood shavings bale, I have decided I will get fleece as the wood shavings are making me sneeze too much and I get it everywhere.

I have a 120 cage as unfortunately I can not build a C&C cage due to my cats.

Do I need to put anything underneath the fleece?
If so what?
How often should I change the fleece?
How many fleece bases should I have?
How do you dry it after its been washed. (Tumble dryer not currently an option)

I put 2 towels underneath, wash it every 3 days, and it is actually quite dry when you take it out I just hang it somewhere (preferably outside) and it dries quickly xx

I've literally just been buying some new stuff for mine :D I use towels, then fleece on top of that. Ive just bought some "microfibre" towels - apparently they are "super" absorbent and "pull" moisture away from our skin - so I'm guessing it will pull moisture away from the fleece, and i got a pack of 3 and each fits my cage perfectly! I got them, and 2 new cool fleeces on ebay :)

New fleece needs to be wash several times before use to break down the barrier and so the fleece wicks away the wetness of piggy pee. The more often it's wash the better. With no fabric conditioner.

An absorbant layer under the fleece to 'catch' the wetness. Some people use old towels or disposable bed pads, I find the Huggies drynites a god send, also the washable bed pads are good and I think they smell less than the towels.

It's ok to have a c and c with cats - you can make a single story one and make a roof out of the grids (it might not hold out against a determined cat that wants to sit on the roof though!)

The fleece is quick and easy to dry as it doesn't really retain fluid - you will know yourself if you have a fleece jacket or top that when it's washed it's almost dry when you take it out of the machine - it's the same with a big piece of fleece - it will be dry within half an hour on a washing line if it's windy or warm (or both!) or you can simply hang it on an airer inside and it will dry fast.

I just shake mine each day and wash it every 4 or 5 days (though I think it could go longer as my piggies mainly wee in their litter trays and the fleece doesn't seem to smell even after 5 days.

I have disposable pampers bed mats under mine - they draw wetness through the fleece and they will last a full week under the fleece. Long term though I am going to try something washable underneath as I think the bed mats will be dear in the long run

Hi,

Just to add, i also have cats and i have a c+c. One of my cats likes to sleep on top of the cage, so i used pieces of plastic pipe (from B&Q) cut to make upright supports. This year, i'm going to use strips of wood horizontally across the top to support it, as i don't like the "pillars" to get in the way of the piggies!

I'll post pics once it's finished ;) (currently in the making!)

I use an old quilted mattress topper under my fleece. I found the Huggies/Pampers bed mats great, but they are too expensive for me as i have 5 pigs.

You should put towels underneath the fleece or any absorbent layer, cotton is best.

Hmmm, I should try and swipe the towels as our bathroom is being redecorated and we can get some nice new towels since they are a lil old and scraggly and go really scratchy if you dont tumble dry.
