Sorry I'm sure this has been posted already but I can't find it :red

I have just changed my boys over from wood shavings to fleece and I have a couple of questions. First of all they have left me a lovely crusty secretion on their new fleece which hasn't come off in the washing machine and I have only been able to pick the edges off with with my fingers - any suggestions how to get rid of it?

The other thing I did, while they still remember wood shavings, is I put a corner litter tray in their cage with wood shavings in it in the hope of inspiring some toilet training and making their fleece bedding last a bit longer. However, Gilbert has now taken this as his favourite sleeping place! And I thought they would thank me for giving them comfy fleece instead! :{ Do you think this means he prefers the old wood shavings and I should go back to that, or is he just enjoying the familiarity of it?

Lastly, I've read on here that most people use newspaper as a bottom layer, but I've just been putting a doubled or tripled towel under their fleece. Should I be putting newspaper under the towel and why?

Thanks :)

i set up mine with a layer of newspaper then a towel then puppy pads.
I'm not sure what you mean about a crusty secretion but maybe try squirting washing up liquard on it before putting in the machine or put it on a hotter wash

The crusty secretion sounds like "boar glue" (dried semen) and that is a very good description. Could you try sugar water? I must admit that Llewelyn is very good and only leaves it on Nerys' nose every now and then for some strange reason!

I have several big litter trays and some of my piggies do like to have a sleep in them. It doesn't bother me, as they get changed regularly, and at least all the leaks from when they are sleeping are going in the right place! Just a matter of preference - some piggies prefer the the smell of hay.

You do not need newspaper if you do not like to. When you are feeling comfy with using fleece, you could trial incontinence pads.

I didn't used to put newspaper down when I used towels/fleece but I assume it's just another way to absorb the wee.

What temp did you wash it on? I'm going up to 80 for the inco pads and 60 for the fleece at the mo (first few washes you might want to do it lower as I think it might shrink) - They all come out MUCH cleaner now I'm washing at a higher temp.

Hi
I put puppy pads in the bottom of mine then newspaper then shavings which seems to work ok, i also put shavings and wood based cat litter in their toilet, but mine love to lie in their toilet, which i change during the week and disinfect everything when i clean them out, ive also made some small fleece pillows which they love to lie on, i wash these every week to keep them clean,

they seem ok with it, although shavings do make a mess! lots of hoovering needed! lolrolleyes

I'm getting a little confused, do you use the vet bed throughout the whole cage or just in the sleeping area, mine are in outdoor hutches at the mo and I use the old nespaper, shavings and hay but would like to move into something less messy (my hubby makes me hoover the patio when i've cleaned them! LOL).
