I'm thinking of changing from sawdust and straw to fleece. Could someone tell me what I need and whether there is an easier way of doing it instead of having to sew it all together. I'm rubbish at sewing ")

gosh i dont worry about all that sewing, i just put a layer of newspaper and then fold up a fleece blanket. Does need changing regularly though cause it gets wet. I find vetbed better its so absorbant, brought mine on ebay xx

Hello Melly,

Fleece will usually be 150cms wide so you just by the length you need for your cage and cut it to fit. No sewing is necessary.

As you have posted in my cavy cozies thread, I thought I'd just point out that I sell fleece by the metre in some of my patterns. It is £7 per metre (and 150 cms wide). You are welcome to buy part of a metre if that is more convenient. I know that it sounds as if it is quite expensive, but this price includes postage which is around £2.36 for a metre of fleece! It is very good quality, though, and will last you for a very long time.

You can also buy a cozy to match if you're interested!

If you can't stretch to £7 a metre then primark also sell fleece for about £3 for 120cms. It is thinner and not as hard wearing but they do have some very pretty patterns. They also often have it on sale at the end of seasons.

what patterns do you have on your fleece?

i'v recently changed from sawdust to fleace aswel. i got my fleece off ebay for 4 pound each including postage. i dont sew mine. i have just cut it to size. and i have newspaper or mattress protectors underneath and have the fleece just a little bit bigger so i can tuck it under. i wash it all a couple of times a week. and i change the newspaper and shake the poo off the fleece everyday. i think the piggys prefer it :)

The first three are photos I took myself and they make the colours look brighter than they really are.

If I was to get fleece for my hutch, how much would I need?
I have a 4x2 two storey hutch. Do you double the fleece up? Would I need two lots so one is in the wash and one in the hutch? etc.
Sorry for hijaking your thread

For an indoor cage one layer of fleece is enough, but for an outdoor hutch doubling up would give extra insulation. To work out how much you need you need to measure the inside dimensions of the hutch. ie the actual floor space. I would imagine that 4 foot x 2 foot are the external dimensions.

I have been using fleece for five years on a large indoor c+c cage. I would really recommend getting four sets of fleece. It is an outlay of around £20-30 at the beginning, but you obviously save on woodshavings in the long term. I am still using some of my original fleeces after five years of washing once a fortnight. If you have four sets then you can go to the hutch, take out the dirty bedding and put on three changes before having to do a wash. I only do a piggy wash once a fortnight. If you only have two sets then as soon as you have taken the dirty out of the hutch you have to wash it.

I change my cage about once every five days or twice a week.

Yeah, my hutch is indoors. DO you just put newspaper under the fleece?

Yes, I have always just put newspaper underneath. Some people also use either incontinence pads or mattress protectors. I have never tried either and always find that the fleece does a good job of wicking the urine away.

Hello Milster,

I've just worked it out and I think that to do one change for both storeys of your hutch would cost £10.50 including postage.

Hope this helps. If you want to have a look at anything else on my website the link is www.cavycozies.com I also have a thread in fundraising.

OK thanks, I'll have a think about what we want, I reckon we might have a couple of beds as well :)

Let me know what you would like. You can only check out whole metres of fleece on my website, but you can place an order by e-mail to [email protected]. You can still pay by paypal which would mean that the items were still covered by the paypal guarantee. I can either send you a paypal invoice or you can send a paypal payment to me and class it as 'payment for goods or service'.

I can cut the fleece into equal lengths for you so it fits your hutch.

I use fleece for the top section of my hutch (shreaded toilet paper for bottom - it feels like its toilet paper, its pretty good). I didnt want to use sawdust in the hutch for a variety of reasons and although they are outside for the warmer months they will be coming inside and will use fleece for that too.

I have a thick layer of newspaper which I can change daily the top layer if need be. Followed by a towel which I change every 3 days, then the fleece which I remove and shake off (spot clean) daily. Sounds like a whole load of work but actually I only clean the hutch out every 4 days completely and thats not because its needed, it is just the routine I have, doing the spot cleans keeps it very tidy and clean.

I do have a litter tray under the hay rack to also minimise the mess produced while nibbling on the hay - although minty has other ideas and moves it out the way rolleyes then they piddle in one corner which I have now just put newspaper down until I can try a corner litter tray (not enough space otherwise) and see if that helps them be tidy in the hutch.

This thread has been really useful!

I'm getting our piggies on Easter Monday. Will be using fleece for sure!

OH wasn't convinced about the fleece idea but i've talked him round! Reminded him how messy saw dust is and that was enough!

We changed to fleece yesterday. We went to our local Dunelm Mill and bought 2 big pet fleece blankets for £5.99 each and then cut them to fit into our cage, we ended up with about 4 sets. Then we went to P @ H and bought some beds!, we had enough fleece left to make a couple of little blankets for the beds! What spoilt little piggies we all have :))

I got my fleece from Primark for £2.50 each. They each measure 125cm x 150cm which fits my c+c cage (3 x 4) perfectly. Thought it was a really good price!
