Hi Starsky&Hutch :)

We are using vetbed which we recently switched to. At first I thought the same, the thing is the fleece keeps any water and/or pee at the top. What we have done is to take a large towel (beach towel) and fold it in half length ways. This is the placed over the half of the cage (back half) where our boys do most of their peeing. It's more absorbent and draws any liquid down so we only change the towel every four days (give or take) and the vetbed every week. Hope that helps.

Ruthigrace23 is right - new fleece needs to be washed at least three times before use. Fleece has a sort of waterproof barrier that needs to be broken down to make sure that the pee is all wicked away to the towel/newspaper underneath.

I use one layer newspaper, one layer towel, and then one or two layers of fleece. With new fleece, I wash it three times, one at 60 to make sure it does all its shrinking. The next two I do at 40. Using fabric softner will only restore the waterproof barrier, so don't use it or your fleece will not wick the pee down to the towel.

I have four pigs on fleece. In the boys cage, I also put down fleece/towel 'rugs' (just fleece and towel stitched together) in the places I know they pee the most. These I change twice a week, and the whole cage gets a big clean once a week. Then it all goes in the wash together :)
