I am sure it has been talked about before, but after just starting to use fleece I am already starting to have troubles with hay etc. getting stuck in the filter and breaking it. Any one have any solutions?

We had exactly the same problem, so I went to a local farm supplies shop and bought a zip up wash bag that horse riders use to wash their horse blankets.

It's got tiny holes in the page so the fleece gets washed, but the hay (and any other bits) are retained in the bag.

If you can't find one, you could buy some cheap pillow cases, and sew zips into them for a similar effect.

Hope that helps.

Edit: Just had a look on Amazon and they have jumbo ones for 16 quid.

I just shake and brush all my fleece off before I put it in the machine, it works fine for me :)

We use the horse washing bags produced above. We had ours getting stuck with hay and hair too, now we just brush off as much as we can and bung it all in the horse bag.

i just shake off the bits and wash it. and change the filter regularly. there isn't much in there usually anyway.

i tried those wash bags and didn't like them because the little bits were still on the fleece after because they don't have anywhere to go. i'd rather they went into the machine than stay on the fleece :))

we also have washing machine insurance just incase! :))

Another fan of the horse supplies wash bag here, I wouldn't be without .

The weave of the material is very tight so no hay or hair from the fleece escapes from the bag in to the washing machine.

When I was using fleece, I stuffed mine into a pillowcase when I washed them. They came out clean and the hay was contained and stayed in the bottom of the bag. Washing machine filters are a right pain in the butt to clean yourself- I think they do that on purpose to keep the technicians paid :)

Thank you everyone! I have tried shaking and vacuuming and all that, but the hay is pretty persistent - i can never get it all off. We recently bought from Aldi one of those self cranking camping washing things from ALDI - It sort of works. I will try and have a look on eBay.
