Hi everyone,

I am hoping I can call on the wealth of knowledge here yet again.

I am currently looking after my neighbours dog. She arrived yesterday and will be staying for a substantial amount of time. She has recent alopecia and has visited the vet numerous times with her owners regarding this. I was grooming her tonight and saw numerous insects crawling in and out of the thick fur on her face. On inspection they are definitely fleas.
I am furious that neither her family nor the vet noticed that she has fleas, and that she's been having extensive testing at the vets and this has been completely missed. I've had dogs for 14 years (4 dogs in that time) and have never had a single issue with fleas. But now, for the first time, we have them in our house, and I'm worried about her passing them to my dog, but he is treated monthly anyway.

The biggest worry I have is my 6 guinea pigs. The visiting dog is not allowed upstairs, but I just noticed a flea on me (horrific, guessing it jumped there as I was grooming her) and I'm worrying that me or my dog could have carried fleas upstairs.

Will they iharmguinea pigs? I have two guinea pigs that are approaching 6 years old, and one who is4vo.5 o always more concerned about those guys.

And how can I treat the house for fleas safely without harming the guinea pigs? (unsure if house flea treatments are dangerous to guinea pigs)

I feel completely freaked out by the whole thing and really can't be doing with it. It's the last time we have a dog to stay I think!

Thanks as always.

Fleas from cats or dogs will not survive on guinea pigs, so if any fleas were to make their way to your piggies, then they would leave again pretty quickly.
Flea treatments are dangerous to piggies so if you need to treat a carpet etc, then the piggies need to be shut away and the rest of the house properly ventilated

Fleas And Flea Powders - Warning!
