gpigs

hi, i've just rescued 3 guinea pigs that were being mistreated. One of them has a bald patch which looks a bit scabby and has quite flaky skin. The vet has given it an injection and said it was a form of mite and its seems to have improved but not completely cleared. Is there anything i can buy to put on it without it having to have injections every week

Hi
Congrats on getting your rescue pigs :)

The vet should give another injection in around 10 days time...my vet prescribes xeno 450 which is topical, you just squeeze the drops on the skin, less painful.
The injection will kill the mites but I think eggs will hatch so he will need another to kill those ones.

If the site is sore and irritated, you could try some calendula cream from health food shops. This is very soothing. I always keep a stock of creams etc from www.gorgeousguineas.com you could look at her site and email her for her advice, she is very helpful :)

Agree with Lavender Jade - it's probably mites. Chrissie from Gorgeous Guineas is very helpful.

the pig definately didn't like the injections:)) so looking for something less stressful for it

You can use Xeno 450 pipettes, you usually get 6 in a pack.

You use it once a month on them and you dot it down their back onto the skin. It sometimes depends on the weight on the piggie, over a certain weight you might need two pipettes (Fergie and Pie need two! fat gurlies)

But yeah it might be a good way, plus its inexpensive, they 6 pipette pack is around £20 and you would need to do that ONCE month.

I would heavily recommend it as mine havent had problems since using it.

I would also suggest Gorgeous Guineas as they are all herbal, smell lush and really help flaky dry skin.

Ivermectin in any form should NOT be used once a month,it should only be used when the gps actually have mites.Using any drug routinely will build immunity,so when a problem occurs the drug could be inaffective.Ivermectin is a strong pesticide and should only be used when necessary.

I recently tested Green People Organic Baby salve on one of my boars with a itchy patch on his back.It is brilliant,. It also works well on sore pads. Some friends have tried it on bite wounds and it cleared them up quickly. The salve has no chemicals and is not expensive. You only need a small amount.

I bought my tube in Waitrose and I have seen the range in health food shops. They do a range of baby products and some for adults.
I do not buy cosmetic, toiletries, drugs etc on the internet, unless the outlet sells in shops as well. The products could contain anything.,and you have to pay postage!.

My mistake Mary, I was advised by the vets that it should be administered once a month :0
