I noticed that Fizz had a lump!I had to take her to vet for bloat so I asked the vet what it could be?
It was quite big,but not weeping! The vet didn't want to operate because there was no need as it was OK as it was!

Well I then noticed that it had grown on Thurs/Friday last week. But Saturday morning it had burst,so phoned my friend (she is a veterinary nurse) so I went over with Fizz to show Julie! We cleaned it and covered it with cream and a plaster! It was horrible and it smelt! I separated Fizz from Boris and Piglet so she could have some peace! She is in the shed for now.I cleaned it again on Sunday and it was looking OK.Julie was pleased with it too.I felt guilty for not taking Fizz to the vets but Julie just said that the vet would only do want we had done!Anyway I took Fizz to the vet on Monday (yesterday) Vet said to looked OK and gave me some Baytril given daily! And bathe the wound twice a day,it does look alot better! O0 So we just have to wait and see if it heals, vet doesn't really want to operate!

yuck poor guinea i bet that was painfull my cat had a cyst on her face once that smelt and was a mess when it burst she recovered fine though

Fizzi has been soo good O0 She was busy eating celery leaves when we cleaned the wound first time, but she has been really good over the last few days!
Anyone have any advice or tips that will help! O0

that wound looks quite deep... I am by no means an expert but I would say as with any wound that deep (thinking bedsores in humans, abcesses in guinea pigs) you would have to ensure it heals from the inside, e.g. ensuring the skin doesnt just heal at the top but leaving a big infected hole underneath it. In humans you would fill the hole with gauze to keep the hole open and replace several times a day as the gauze will absorb fluid, when replacing it also rinsing out the hole with sterile water. Thus you would allow the wound to heal up from the bottom. However I have no experience with cysts as such so I am not sure if they are similar, sorry... Also have no idea - apart from >>this<< - how to keep the piggy from getting to the wound...

I hope your piggy has a speedy recovery, good luck! O0

Aww poor little thing! Hope it heals up quickly. Can't believe how massive it is

aww, thats exactly what lois's cyst looked like when it burst, i left it two weeks before deciding to let her have the op and it just didnt get any better my vet said she would like to operate otherwise it would just get worse so i had it removed and lois has recovered very well, before the op she was on baytril and daily cleaning but it was getting infected so thats why i went ahead with the op, after the op the tissue inside was still infected so took weekly trips to the vets for well over a month and she was on baytril with daily flushing and it eventually cleared up, she was 6 years old when she had the op they removed 2-3 other lumps which would have grown into bigger cysts at the same time.

I really hope it does heal and it doesnt become necessary to operate.

sending hugs and healing vibes to fizzi :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: it does look nasty O0 hoping it won't get infected and so glad the sweet angel is being the ideal patient O0 she looks lovely and inquistitive (sp) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

aah bless her hope she gets better soon and heals from the inside out without infections

Very interesting post Abnoba - you described exactly what needs to happen. I really shudder when some people say how their vet has removed an abscess and stitched it up afterwards....eek :(

Gaile – did your vet actually call it a cyst rather than an abscess? As you mentioned the vile smell it really does sound more like an abscess. An abscess on the back end like that could easily be caused by a bite. If you think about how Abnobe described it, you can see how a ‘puncture wound’ from two sharp little teeth can heal quickly at the surface and trap a pocket of infection underneath.

Good luck with Fizz’s treatment.

Agree with you 100% Ulrike the wound must heal from the inside other wise it will just form a pocket of puss and then form into an abscess again >:( >:( >:( >:(
We had to deal with a similar situation, i had to pick off the scab each time it formed so i could get the inside to heal first, it's not pleasant but it worked O0
All our love and healing wheeks for little Fizzi :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I hope shes feeling better :smitten: Hopefully it will be healed soon :)

Thanks everyone O0 Fizzi doing well,I've been bathing it twice daily.Tonight Julie was passing and came in and had a look. She removed some of the pus and bathed it too.It looks healthy the yuk is mostly around the edges. Fizzi wasn't even bothered that Julie was taking the gunk out,she was very happily eating cucumber! O0

It's sort of raised lump? Sort of donut shape and opened up in the middle!

I agree! Stuart, one of my piggies, had been attacked by his brother but very strategically under his fur. He had antibiotics from the vet which made the wound heal over nicely but too soon. The infection was still in there and formed an abscess and finally burst open again.

Keep an eye on the wound so it heals from the inside out. Hope all goes ok!

Just a little update Fizzi doing really well! It is healing nicely, the gunk is slowly going and taking the bayril! :smitten:
I'm putting cream on to keep it soft and alot of the pus is coming out from inside it. Ive made the hutch in the shed into two areas so that Boris & Piglet in one area and Fizzi in the other she seems alot happier now.. O0

so glad fizzi is doing better O0 sending more hugs and healing vibes your way :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: here's hoping it continues to improve O0 was it a bit or cause unknown? glad fizzi is being good and taking her medicine O0 special :-* :-* :-* for fizzi.
