Looking into changing the girls bedding. At the moment they are on sawdust as they were where I got them from, but now they are settling in I'm looking for a better bedding type for them to prevent future medical problems. They are outdoor piggies so fleece not an option. They have oat hay in their bedroom over sawdust at the mo.
My question is how do you find it to use?
Is it warm?
where have you found it the cheapest?
any other types I can consider?
thanks in advance piggie owners! Xxxxx

Bedding For Guinea Pigs - Overview

I use a combnation of bedings. I find the most economical is Aubiose - which I get from an equine supplier . I use this in hay trays. Fitch is softer so I use Fitch in their sleeping areas .

i love fitch. yes, it's warm, soft on their little feet and virtually dust free. at the moment i mix fitch and finacard and they work really well together and work out cheaper than buying two fitch :)

eta: fitch is cheapest from their own site i think.

do you have to muck out fina card lots? I just cant help but think of wet cardboard and how it goes squishy?

It does . I spot clean every evening and remove the wet patches .

just the same as other bedding to be honest. it's softer and works better than you'd think it would. and for some reason, fitch and finacard work really well together. i spot clean daily to remove wet patches and poops, and i do a full clean twice a week :)

I LOVE fitch - having tried all sorts, the latest being megazorb, I'm going back to fitch and sticking with it! It's soft, very absorbent and doesn't smell.

I dont want to be dramatic but I used flich and a pig ate it, and it got stuck in the intestine causing a blockage,

Vet had to opperate as it is not degradable .

Still have a 1/4 of the bag in my boiler cubard as ! a reminder i gess

,! Yes l remember it was the first time l used Jill (vet) she is great

I have bought a large bag of snowflake for the moment as I just don't know about fitch. What's the forums thought of snowflake? Can I use long term safely?

It seems to be a bit of a marmite thing.

Some say that it's fine as very well dust extracted and kiln dried so phenols aren't a problem. However others say that it's still not healthy and can dry skin.

After tons of reading I tried it. I've used it for 3weeks. It doesn't seem dusty and home bargains sell it really cheap. A large bag did two full cleans, with a good deep layer, on my 6x2ft hutch (spot cleaning was a little extra). Its really absorbant too. My only problem is the pigs keep moving it, so its really deep in some areas and keep exposing newspaper in others. I'm going to try finacard this weekend.

I used to use snowflake and it was slightly dusty but not as bad as some other products I have used. I found that the snowflake worked really well as a bedding for my hutches. I just hated how much they kicked over the shed and always having to sweep up.
I have now switched to fleece with easibed in the litter trays. I find this works best for me but If I had to change back I would switch to shavings again as this is the most economical bedding.

Thanks @Cavy_lover I think I will stick with it and it will give me time to find the right product and see if I can source locally. What ever I stick with its important to me that it sourced from a local shop x support local! x
