Hi guys!
I just went to my first vet visit today, all we got were some antibiotics for my pig which I suspected having a UTI and the fee for this vet visit was £90(!). I have never had guinea pigs before, and I've read that you should always keep money spare for their vet visits but, just to be blunt, is it just me that thinks £90 for some antibiotics is a bit overkill?! If anyone is in the Cornwall area and has any recommendations for vets which are somewhat cheaper, I'd be grateful. Thanks for reading.

Dignified Sir George has another UTI and the local vets for pets (they see a lot of guinea pigs) charged £86. They did give me some Metacam as well as the Baytril. Also, I was given enough for 2 courses as the poor boy seems to be prone to them (3rd time in 2 months)

Aw, poor George - I hope he's able to get better soon. To be fair, I haven't seen how much medicine the vets have given me yet as I'm still travelling, but hopefully it will be enough for at least 2 courses as well. Some pigs do seem to be a lot more prone to illnesses than others though, I'm sorry to hear about George again. 😢

It's unfortunately a fairly normal bill now. You can get some cheaper vets sometimes but depending if they are good with guinea pigs it may not be worth paying less. Costs have definitely gone up.

yes, I paid £99 for AB’s, dog Metacam 5ml and a consultation which didn’t clear Kiki’s UTI. I then went to another vet and received the same AB 3 times the dose (which worked!) metacam 15ml and was charged another £100. then to cap it all I was sent a further consult for £59 a month later by the original vet after being asked to come back 2 days in if she was no better to be greeted by a newly qualified vet who knew little about GP’s and said best continue for the remaining 5 days. I did get a refund for the £59 after complaining

Daylight robbery, but Kiki was cured. it’s the last time I go back to my original vets though. Will now go to the Exotics in Falmouth. not cheap but the exotic vet seemed clued up on guinea pigs

Thank you! If we need to go to the vets for any other issues (hopefully not!) we'll be sure to go there. It's frustrating to find any good vets, especially in Cornwall!

If you need any info on vets just send me a PM. I have lived down here since 2012 and tbh I’ve not been impressed apart from the Exotic vet we saw in Falmouth just before Christmas. I take all my piggies to Simon or Kim Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton if at all possible and for any operations.

Thank you, how do I send a PM?
