I got my guinea pig bear a few months ago and I noticed he wipes his butt on the floor a lot. Didn't think much of it till I noticed he had this pink skin coming out of his anus when he rubbed it on the floor. It smells very bad when he does this and it looks very concerning. I'm already trying to get him into the vet but they are booked out for a while so I'm hoping to get some advice on here. Hes eating good and pooping normally. I'm attaching two photos. If anyone can tell me anything about what this is I would really appreciate it, I'm very concerned.

Hmmm,..I’m glad you noticed Bear’s butt… I can’t say fir sure what it is… I gave 2 males… each in their own cage… side by side… I see them rub their butts around the cage… but I know for them … it’s just a “marking process “…Bear… has rubbed his butt raw tho… pls keep your Vet meeting and pls update us here.. I’m thinking of Bear.. it’s good he’s eating well.. always a good sign🥰

Ouch looks sore 😳 I would probably until you can get him to a vet line any hard parts of the cage with fleece including the cage floor and try to take out anything that he could potentially rub on and also does he have a friend 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum. I have two boars and they do this to scent mark. Percy also does it when he’s been rumblestrutting around. I’m not sure from your photo if it’s very pink or not. Percy’s is a bit pink inside which is normal. Does it go back in once he’s stopped rubbing it? It shouldn’t stay like that all of the time. I would say if you are worried it’s better to see a vet. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the response! I will definitely give an update and keep the vet appointment🙂

Thank you so much for the advice, I will definitely be doing that! And yes, I have two, Bear and Georgio, however Bear is the only one having this issue

Thank you so much for responding😊 It does go back in once he stops rubbing it on the ground and it is a pink color. But there has been more of a foul odor when he does this which is new, it never used to smell like this.

Teenage boars can be quite smelly. Don’t be tempted to over clean their cage - the more you clean, the more they will scent mark and the more it will smell. It can help to only clean half the cage at a time - that way the cage will still smell of them and they will still recognise it as their territory
Rubbing himself along the floor is simply scent marking - it’s normal for them to do this

Good to know, thank you so much I really appreciate the help ☺️

How old is he? Maybe he’s had a hormonal spike. Boar marking does smell really really bad 🤢
Estimated birthday is sometime around may so I believe Bear is about 7 months. When I got him they told me he was a girl, but then I later figured out he was a boy.

7/8 months is coming up to a hormone spike. So you have two boars now?

Hi!

OUCH!

Good that you are geeting him to a vet. Please try to use soft cage lining and change it very frequently; ideally every day because of the infection risk with an open sore.

Hopefully your boy will stop rubbing his bum as much once the pain and the irritation has gone again.
