I've had my new guinea pigs for a week now and they finally had their first proper clean out today, however taking them out and putting them back in (we used their hidey instead of picking up) has seemingly stressed them out the the same extent as when we first got them home. Did anyone else have a stressful first experience with cleaning their piggies' cage? Is there any way I can make it easier for them next time, and will they eventually get used to the change?

Give them time to settle down, they will gradually become more confident as time goes by. Whenever you go to their cage give them a small treat, I.e. a sprig of coriander or dandelion leaf, you will soon have them eating out of your hand x
Have you read the guinea pig guides on the green bar, there’s one on Settling your piggies including piggie whispering, it’s great advice in there and worth a read x here’s the link below

Yeah I've been hand feeding and they've gotten pretty confident around me, I'm just worried that having to change their cage every week will undo the progress.

No I wouldn’t worry, they will get used to the disturbance, you can always leave a little bit of old hay in, their smell on it will reassure them x

I don’t really remember my pigs’ first cage clean, although I don’t think it was too much of a struggle.
I seem to recall putting them in a pink tub with some hay, and trying my best to keep them calm

Jasper, was very freaked out when I first cleaned his cage. Tiberius, however, was very chill about it. Cherub and Seraphina, were completely fine when I cleaned the cage with them. So Jasper was the only guinea pig I owned that had an issue with cage cleaning for the first time.

Piggies don't know it's 1st clean so they be unsettled.
They will get used to it. Give um time.
picking them up in hidey great idea.
When I clean mine Heidi the boss watches me lol. x
