Hi, the more I read this thread, the more inadequate I feel to deal with problems that might arise. I don't have many guinea pigs so would it be best just to go to the vet if I am worried, or are there certain things that you would have handy to use? If so what would be your suggestions. Many of the things you mention on here I have never heard of. Quite worrying?/?/

I'm the same as you. I have 2 pigs and have know idea what to do with them if they become ill apart from taking them to the vet! I have heard people talk about 'critical care' but I don't even know what this is mallethead All I have in my guinea pig cupboard is shampoo, shampoo for mites and lice (just in case), wet wipe things and a brush :o

you can get critical care online from shops or from the vet when they arent eating, drinking.

I have lice shampoo and Spot on, creams for dry ears and feet. If something is wrong with my piggy which cannot be treated at home i would prefer to take them to the vet really so I dont really keep supplies. If i need them I will get them!

Clare, I asked about critical care too, cos I was concerned. If you look through this Health and Illness section I headed up a thread called 'Critical Care' and got some really good advice, and where to buy from etc. x

www.gorgeousguineas.com might give you some ideas. I would definately keep critical care and I always keep a jar of veg baby food just in case as I've had a lot of piggies with teeth problems and haven't always had critical care to hand. Most of the time your piggie would need to go to a vet if they were ill as you can never second guess what is wrong and piggies can go down hill quickly.

Thanks rw. Will definitely get some baby food. Where would I be able to get a little syringe from? I know what you mean about the vet. I would never hesitate, just want to be best prepared. Thanks again. x

I bought mine in Boots - a 1ml syringe, the smallest they sell. Don't tell them it's for a piggie because they won't sell them to you. I find the ones from Boots were stronger than the ones from a vets.

I have savlon, vaseline, vitamin C drops, multi vitamin liquid and lice shampoo in my guinea pig shed.

Piggies are funny little things. They can mask illness very easily and will deteriorate very quickly also. Going to the vet is usually expensive, but unfortunately has to be done from time to time. My last bill was for Holly which was just over £50 for a consultation, scan and putting her to sleep.

This forum is great for asking and seeking out advice and help.
