Hello all.

Would appreciate any advice people could give us concerning the following:

Recently lost one of our 2 boars, both of whom had been part of the same litter and had been together ever since. Both are/were 3 years old, both neutered and had very few problems getting on with each other. Looking for a companion for the surviving cavy for friendship and companionship.

Am considering giving a young sow a home and would welcome any advice or past experience anyone has had with bonding older males and younger sows and whether it's a good idea or generally to be avoided.

Many thanks.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry for your loss. You are very welcome to post a tribute to the boy you have lost in our Rainbow Bridge section.

The safest place to rebond guinea pigs is at one of our recommended good standard rescues that offer dating at the rescue under expert supervision, as that way you come home with piggies that are happy with each other. All these rescues have a mandatory quarantine/health care and a pregnancy watch, so you can neatly avoid all the usual pitfalls that can await the unwary. It is well worth travelling that bit further for total piece of mind!

We can also provide recommendations and contacts for other countries.

With a cross gender bond, age is less important than mutual liking and ideally letting the piggies choose each other. My own neutered boars live happily with sows that are up to three years older or younger in their various groups.

With members from all over the world, it would be a great help yo us if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details so we can always tailor our advice and recommendations to your specific options straight away. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thanks!

Welcome!
I'm so sorry you lost your piggy. I hope you find success in introducing a new guinea pig.
As for advice, here is some experience I have from introducing my 4-month-old to my 1-year-old:
Sometimes my older piggy would mount my younger one, and he still does it today. Don't worry, this is normal and I am almost certain it will happen while introducing.
If they get too aggressive, separate them immediately.

Thanks for your posts, will take them on board. We have the chance of rehoming a 3 month-old sow from a friend whose guinea pigs recently had a litter, so will see if we can take Bertie to meet and have a play with them and see how things go before we commit.

Thanks again.

That's worth a try

I am sure you will have read Wiebke's post about rescue centres .

How about the one
in Kidsgrove?

The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue
Kidsgrove
Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire ST7

Apart frome the Potteries GPR you can also contact the RSPCA Walsall as you other closest piggy savvy rescue that offers dating for your neutered boar. You will be in very safe hands at either rescue!

PS: have you considered adopting a bonded pair of sows for your boy if single sows are not available at the moment? That way, you won't end up with another single piggy straight away.

Yes, we have contacted the rescue centre in Kidsgrove but they dont have anything suitable at the moment. We did have the idea of getting a pair of sows that would help each other settle in. Sure Bertie would love the idea of a hareem rather than a single girlfriend!

Thanks.
