sorry if ive posted this in the wrong section :-\

there is nothing wrong with my piggles, (apart from munchies hair problem still), but i read somewhere but cant remember where, that someone took their piggy to a rodentologist in derby!

ive been unsucessful in my own searches, as id rather go to a rodentologist than a vet if i do have any problems, so does anyone know if there is definately a rodentologist in derby?

I do not know - but have you tried searchign on search engines to find one ? - oh and has the hair loss to one of your piggies being treated ? it might be mites :( Good luck in finding the place ;)

the hair loss is definately not mites. theres a thread or two on it in this section O0 ive tried every possible treatment available

i tried typing into google but all that came up was the website in question that i found the derby rodentologist mentioned on.

unfortunately it doesnt give details, just says that the person travelled to that rodentologist for their piggy

You need to be a member of the CCT to get details of local rodentologists - the contact details are at the top of this board.

but doesnt that mean i have to pay the membership fee?

i only want to know if there is a rodentologist in my area :-\

Its less than £25... if you want to use the rodentologist you have to be a member anyway so worth paying the fee really - especially as it helps poorly pigs and gives you things like free nail trimming, worming and constant telephone advice.

As all rodentologists are CCT trained they will be very keen on people being members of the CCT and supporting the organisation.

ah ok. id rather find out if theres one in my area first though before i pay membership, i wouldnt want to pay if theres noone near me. imm going to email them first i think, and speak to them

If its the rodentologist that I am thinking of then she isn't taking on any new patients. She is so good that the CCT were recommending her to too many people to the point where her own health began to suffer. I know this as she is a good friend of mine.

I'm sorry I don't know of another one in Derby but I believe there is one in Nottingham and as Starshine says she knows of three in the Midlands area so it is definitely worth the £25 joining fee, I still pay (as they are also a charity) even though my friend will treat my piggies for nothing.

If you are sure your piggie doesn't have a mite problem, have you thought about a fungal infection, this can be just as common as mites.

i am positive it is neither fungal or mites, as he has been treated for both. he has even been treated for allergies. see the thread "just got back from the vet" for details.

i have a car so i can travel within reason. my current vet is ok, but if i ever have a more serious problem, or need a second opinion like on this occasion, i would prefer a rodentologist.

Hormonal? Even the boys can suffer with hormonal probs. Have never seen it but have heard :)

Is he Rex/Rexoid? They tend to thin out a bit. Have we been down this road LOL!

Diet? Bedding?

yep he is a rex. i didnt know about the thinning out, but this is a little more than thinning out, its completely bald right down to the skin. i posted pics on my original thread about the issue but it has gotten a little worse since then.

my vet didnt even consider hormonal ::) thats why i thought a second opinion may be useful. is there no way to solve hormonal problems.

bedding-wise he is on megazorb, with a huge pile of hay in one corner to snuggle in, but i have been using this combination for 6 months with no problems.

dietwise, he has a variety of veggies twice daily, and is currently on wagg guinea pig crunch, but as of today I'm intending to wean the piggies onto wagg optimum, as i think it will be better for them

I would change the bedding, it doesn't matter how long they've been on it they can still be affected by this. Its possibly a Rex thing, but who knows! Yes, hormonal probs can be given Chorulon injections (ask Vedra about it, I've never had it done for any of my boars but was considering it once ).

Probably not diet but it does affect skin and coat, is usually quite drastic though :)

Start by trying a different bedding perhaps.

thanks for that. ill switch to newspaper and hay for a week and see what happens. thats what i used before using megazorb

The Nottingham Rodentologist is on an extended holiday abroard she will be back about March :)

ah ok :-\

anyone know what area roughly in the east midlands the 3rd rodentologist is?

if its too far away i wont be able to travel there anyway

There are a couple of newly qualified RHA's too - not sure if any of them are Midlands based - all their details will be on the contact list from the CCT.

Vicky could you please pm me the details of the Rodentologist near us. I have a friend who has a piggy with malocclusion and whilst she has found a vet who has successfully trimmed the piggy's teeth they did have to knock him out to do it. As this is likely to be an ongoing thing she is very keen to find someone who can trim his molars without having to put him to sleep to do it.

Many thanks. Sandra

does anyone know of any rodentologists or good guinea pig vets in northan ireland peferably close to belfast ?

let me know please

Any one know of one in the Tyne and Wear area I am very happy with my vets but wuld prefr to take them to a specialist

You need a good vet, rodentologists cannot prescribe meds for you, some can do dental work and all can advise but get a good vet too. They're usually 'affiliated' to a vet anyway.

Well.... I'm a student Rodentologist at the moment but I ain't giving any advice until I'm qualified! ;D I'm in the Channel Islands anyway, so unless you can swim..... :D

It's worth becoming a member for the extra backup, even if you don't want to study. I also agree with Karen that you need a good vet anyway - I've got a vet up my sleeve who I hope to collaberate with when needed after I qualify. Even with my studies, I'd be lost without my vet! ;)

Ive looked into doing the rodentology course but feel I need to know more about it first. Some of the study days that I have read about would be reallly hard for me to attend.

I would love to do it though and it would be such a benefit to the piggies.

I have to do part one of the RHA course, and then once that's done I book for the hands-on part two of the RHA course. In the meantime I've got my anatomy studies - when I go over for my hands-on RHA part two, I'll take the exams for the anatomy bit (she said I could do that since I have to fly up from the Channel Islands and I can do it in one go). Assuming I pass it all, I'll be a qualified Rodentologist. :D Definately worth it - it costs a bit but it's so interesting! O0

looks like ill have to stick to my current vets for now :-\

Nothing wrong with that :D I always say, everyone needs a regular vet they like, and then a number two backup vet, and a number three backup vet. As for me, I have my favourite vet plus three backups! ;D
