I have one of the really large bendy playsticks bent into a tunnel for my 2 boys to hide in. Lately they have been squabbling over hiding/sleeping room, as boys tend to do, and chasing each other out from under it. Little Fry tends to jump a lot when this happens, and he now has a rather long gash on his back/rear end. It seems far too long for Hermes to have scratched or bitten, so I can only assume it is from the sharper bits of the sticks.

I have since changed them out for something more roomy, but just thought I would put this out there. You may want to sand down the sharper bits to be safe!

My gerbils have the smaller ones of these and after a while once they have chewed around the ends, the metal rods that hold them together can stick out which can be VERY Sharp. Best to keep checking them and throw out at this stage x

I often wonder if these are a good idea, as there are gaps between the sticks surely there is a risk of the piggies catching their paws in the gaps if they climb on them? I would worry that mine would get trapped or worse, break a leg :( I won't use them because I'm a worrywort :)

I had similar problems with a willow tunnel. When Rocket got his abcess the only thing we could find in the cage that could have caused the original puncture in his tummy was the willow tube, he'd been chewing the ends. mallethead

Yes, I brought another one of these last Sat. (the large one) and I closely inspected every one on the shelf to get the smoothest one.

I think as what you said, sanding them would be an excellent idea for safety.

i stopped buying them after someone else warned that their piggy had been hurt. and i think someone's rabbit on the rabbit forum was badly hurt aswell.

Grr sorry fat fingers and keep hitting thanks instead of reply. Unfortunately with most hideys and toys we can buy for piggies can cause harm because they are such nibblers lol! Even plastic hideys can get chewed and have sharp bits as a result so I would recommend keeping an eye on anything you buy

I think I'll be sticking to the cardboard chubes and fabric tunnels and hideys in future to be honest. I was horrified when I saw how long the gash is, it seems to be scabbed over and healing well though. :)
