One of my fiance's two pigs, named Lilo, is having some extreemly strange bowel problems. Over the course of the last few months we have noticed that she has had some bloody stool now and then. When we asked our family vet about it, we mentioned that we had changed the Lilo diet a bit with the introduction of more timothy hay and a lot less letuce. He mentioned that the alteration in the diet from a food that is a natural laxative to something more substantial could have caused a tear in the rectum.

Twice now she has had an extreemly strange looking discharge with her stool. Once today and once two months ago. It looks almost fatty in nature, and today she passed 3 of them. They are about an inch to and inch and a half long, and half in inch wide and tall. I provided a picture to give a little visual on what is going on.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

That don't look too good. Hope someone can help here. perhaps get her to a vet who knows about pigs. Good luck!

That looks gross :o

is lilo a sow ? has she been near any boars - looks to me like a dead undeveloped foaetus and explaining the 2 months or so could have been 2 different pregnancys ? other than that I'm really not sure I'm sorry i couldnt help any clearer :-\

up till a week and a half ago this was her only pig. She just got another pig she adopted from a family that could no longer take care of him. But the pigs are seperated and never put together.

would collect sample and take to a piggy savy vet and have it tested, as it does look nasty. in health and illness there is a thread recomended vets so have a look and see if there is one near you, or otherwise tell me where you live and someone may know of a good vet near you. sorry i am not much help but i am in oz, which by the way, welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: either way i would find another vet and have her loofed at and if you could get sample all the better. O0 good luck and keep us posted. O0

oh i have't got a clue i would take her and the sample to vet though :o

please let us know how you get on :smitten:

good luck!

perhaps her body is shedding something, but any vet that doesn't immediately worry about the pigs health isn't a very good vet! Pigs should never ever be pooping something like that

Will since its a she, it is possible it could be an unborn fetus if she has been around a boy or several. This is unlikely if this happens daily or weekly. Next, it is possible it could be a female problem you are mistaking for poop. This would still be abnormal for a female and treatment should be looked into. Lastly, if this really is poop. Bloody poop looking like this is not likely just a rectal tear. I could be wrong though. A rectal tear usually is just normal looking poop/pellets with a little blood. Guinea pigs can get a lot of stuff stuck in their bum holes, including wood chips if not cleaned out frequently. This can lead to an infection/abscess. Also, abnormal poop w/ blood can always be a sign of cancer. Not a lot to do about cancer, but infections can be treated and so can female problems.

I agree. The gp and a sample should be taken to a vet asap.I have never seen anything like this, but it is not normal and I would be worried.

Agree with the above - take a sample and guinea to vet asap. Make sure she is eating and drinking plenty so she doesn't get dehydrated. I would stop any green veg she is eating as well. Let us know how you get on at the vetss and good luck!

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I typed the message on her computer and forgot to send a link to myself so I could check it in my own abode. Lilo is sitting behind me at the moment squeeling and hopping around. I'm having trouble convincing my fiance to take her to the vet, and about to do it myself. She just had to put down her dog of 16 years 2 months ago, so loosing another pet now has her terrifed. So she is doing the awstrich thing. Probably take her in myself on monday.

hope all goes well at the vet, sending hugs and healing vibes for lilo and your fiance :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: am so sorry for the lost of her beloved dog :'( :'( :'( RIP sweet darling run free and get a postman in every tree 0:) 0:) 0:) hoping you take sample with you, you can keep it in a container and put into fridge. good luck and know we're thinking of you O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Good luck at the vets. Sorry for the loss of your dog. You could put it as this could be something simple that can be solved but by leaving her it could get worse. I can understand she doesn't want to loose her though.

Keep us posted, I think we are all curious as to what is going on.

I agree. The sooner she gets to a vet the better. It's probably something that can easily be treated but the longer it is left, the worse it could get. Hope she is ok and keep us posted :)

Yep you definately need to take her to the vet O0

Poor little thing!

At first look I would agree with some other postings above that it could be a female problem with her uterus. I am no vet, but I wouldn't think that it could be linked with change of diet and it looked very strange to be passed from her back passage. And the fact that she hasn't been with a male and that she is passing something like this 3 times today is worrying.

Please, please, please get her to the vet asap and as mentioned above, take a sample of what she is passing with you. Let us know how she gets on, please!
