Hi everyone,

My friend has just become the proud owner of two little boars, we immediately went shopping for an adequate sized cage for them (unfortunately my friend doesn't have the indoor space for a C&C). My initial thought was for her to get the Trixie 150 cage as i've read good reviews on this - but as she needed one immediately - waiting for shipment wasn't an option and we don't have any pet shops local to us that would stock a cage that big.

Looking at p@h online we saw they had in stock their ferplast rabbit 140's, so off we traveled to our local store - when we got there the staff were very puzzled as to what a Ferplast 140 cage was and the biggest cages they had in store were the Ferplast rabbit 120's.

I obviously queried that they wouldn't be big enough for two boys (but don't forget i have a huge C&C - so any cage looks small to me) - and i was greeted with a staff member prceeding to tell me that the RSPCA have approved the Ferplast 100 as the minimum standard for 2 guinea pigs - i argues this fact - but she was persisitent in saying i was wrong re. minimum cage sizes.

So anyway my friend ended up buying the Ferplast Rabbit 120 cage - but is this big enough for two boys?

All replies are greatly appreciated :)

It depends on the boys. In Sweden it's the recommended minimum for two and a lot of people have cages that size for pairs.

The cage minimum standard is just that -minimum. It's not like you will automatically be a terrible person if you put your pigs in something that just meets the minimum standard, just that you will have to clean the cage more often and you will have to give your piggies floortime to meet their needs to run around.

I say it's big enough, but not huge and she may wish pretty soon that she had gotten a bigger cage :) It depends a lot on the piggies. My Martha could live in a shoebox if it was filled with hay, but Mette-Marit wants space to run laps several times a day and not just when I'm home to set up floortime :)

I would say that yes, it is big enough, however she may want to upgrade to a bigger cage as her boys grow up.

Boys tend to need more space than girls to remain good friends ;)

Your friend may consider adding a 'mezzanine' floor and ramp in the cage to give them a little more space too :)

Best of luck in getting the boys settled

The Ferplast 140 is only available to buy online from P@H which is probably why the staff looked puzzled. The 120 is the recommended size for 2 piggies, I have one for my 2 boys and its ok. Although would love to have a C&C for them.

The 120 is a good size for a commercial cage (i.e not C&C), they will be fine in it for now and if your friend wants to give them more room when they grow up then perhaps C&C is an option

I rehome piggies to 120cm indoor cages

I have a Ferplast 120 and it is fine as a minimum. I bought it because I wanted to move my pigs indoors and didn't have room inside for anything bigger. I do aspire to setting up a spacious C&C mansion some day soon but it's just not always realistically possible. In the meantime, a mezz floor hay loft is a brilliant idea. If you keep their food upstairs then they can sleep under the mezz and have the rest of the cage free to run about in! With plenty of floortime/runtime this size should be fine.

If your friend's boars are young and were acquired at the same time, then she may well be able to get away with them sharing everything, which will definitely help with space. I found that my original pair of boars (babies acquired at the same time) happily shared one pigloo, hay rack, food bowl, toys etc as they grew up together.
