Junior Guinea Pig
Hey guys. We have 2 boars who live separately as they hate each other/draw blood but they can sniff/chat/see each other all the time apart from floor time and after the indroductory rumble of 'oh not you again', they settle and are fine.
They're currently housed in a tent/gazebo kind of thing to keep heat in and drafts away, it has sides/windows and closes with a zip to deter nasty foxes.
They live in separate hutches that have 2 floor each for plenty of space, but our piggie thermometers that measures both the temp in the gazebo and also the temp in their 'bedrooms' and last night it got to 0C (the max/min temp display is amazing - highly recommended!).
We have pigloos with both a fleecy cover and base, and we use snugglesafes in them at night - so as you can see we're trying to keep them warm and cosy the best we can, but the lowest indoor 'bedroom' temp last night was 2c and I'm really not comfortable with them staying out anymore. In fact my bf woke me up this morning with a piggie for me to cuddle in bed - he's not a pet person but he can't resist the piggie charm!
Last year we just gave the pigs a hutch cover and a load of hay (we had one of our current boars, and a cagemate who sadly died, living together) and we didn't know half as much about guinea pigs as we do now. I feel terrible knowing they were so cold last year but we did bring them in an awful lot and they spent the odd night in the bath when it got really bad but as they were bonded it made it so much easier.
Anyway - sorry this long but this morning bf said to me 'we really need to look at indoor cages, don't we'? Bless him. We looked at C&C (we'd get a big one and split it down the middle for 2 piggie enclosures) and we also looked at the big Ferplast ones - we'd have to get 2.
Pros of C&C:
-looks nicer (hate the idea of piggies 'behind bars'
-more interaction with pigs
-easy to fold up/store when winter is over
-slightly more interaction between pigs as 2 Ferplast cages will have a bit of a gap
Pros of Ferplast:
-at Christmas when staying with family we can shove both cages in the car and they will be still in their homes while we're away for a few days.
-if they ever need to be with friends/family whilst we're away we'll have the cages ready
-easy to set up
-easier to clean out
-cheaper?
Are we missing anything? Bf wants Ferplast, I want to look into C&C but tbh we will do whatever is best for the piglets.
