Hi everyone,

I have a Ferplast 120 and it came with a house that is basically a platform that rests on the base and has an almost straight 'ramp' with grooves in it. The piggies go up there often to beg for veggies and I put their pellet bowl up there to save on floor space. They really seem to live their cage and that house so far. The problem is that house can't easily be moved to clean the cage without removing the whole top of the cage. i took off the ramp so that I can clean under the house without having to take off the whole top. I realize that my boys seem to jump up on to the platform on top so my question is can I leave the ramp off and just have a platform? Or do they need the security of having the ramp hiding them. They also have a cozy bed and fleece sack and a three way tunnel in there.

Thanks

I just chucked my house like that away, I dont think anything like that that blocks off their running circles is a good idea :-) Mine do just fine with fleecy sacks

Only one of my boys runs around and he darts inside then around then through the tunnel then back in and around again. I think they like the platform and it also means I can put the bowl up there for pellets and save on floor space. Will jumping up like that hurt their backs?

I was thinking of doing something similar as I found it impossible to get my boys out as they just hid behind the ramp. The ramp is so vertical anyway I can't see why it'd be an issue, though I might consider finding some kind of stepping block to encourage them get up (my boys haven't even attempted to use the platform yet as they only go in the cage while I clean the main one out). I do want the platform tho as I want the add floor space it gives.

I took my houses out of my cages like that too. It was hard to clean out, I put Pigloos in to compensate :)

What type of pigloos? where can i get them? i have tried to look but not sure what size etc I need as my boys are still 'babies' so unsure how big they will actually get.

Oh! I have one that was left in our garden when we moved in! Its a "pigloo" brand and another one that a friend gave me which is a "Supa Pet" pigloo. You can get them online or from any pet shop. Or use a card board box. Mine like to sit up high too!

They keep eating cardboard boxes and the ones I seem to have that are suitable size are printed so as soon as I saw they were chewing on it I took it out.

Look around supermarkets and find one and stick your shopping In It they dont bat an eyelid at the till! Places like lidl and aldi are good places to find them as they often put stock out in boxes!

I went to the little pet warehouse and bought 2 fleece pigloos. They are big enough for 2 piggies and a snuggle safe to sleep on. As mine are skinnies I was so frightened that they would snag their skin on the plastic one they came with I threw it out. Also as I have to keep their bedroom at 20c min the fleece pigloo acts as a little hot water bottle with the snuggle safe in. They love it :) tmp_Screenshot_2014-03-12-21-37-38818759370.webp

Oh dear you are tempting me now lol!

Or try guinea pig beds, theres a few people that sell the snuggle sacks on here, I sell them on ebay if you're interested Cosy sack, theres lots of options to make your own aswell.

I've got 2 Ferplast cages and have taken the ramp out for both leaving a shelf. I have been doing this for years and have never had a problem. I found that even when the 'steps' were attached they jumped straight over them anyway.

The only time I stop this is if I'm looking after a poorly piggy who I don't want jumping around - then I take the shelf out altogether.
