Hi had the piggies out today and thought ide let them loose in the herb garden for a little while to see if they liked any herbs but parsley. they went crazy over lemon balm and fennel, only let them have a little, but would it be ok to feed them this on a regular basis, just as a treat or never again?
would appreciate any help :)
thanks :D

I give mine fennel (the bulb) on a regular basis but never given them lemon balm so not a clue on that one!

As a rule of thumb - what's poisonous tastes bad. If they make a dash for it, let them. I had two guinea pigs who were going mad for yarrow, and both lived to over six years...

tried to get my piggies to eat some mint the other day and they would`nt touch it, i was told they liked it.rolleyesrolleyes

Lemon balm is nice in green or fruit salads, also in summery drinks or as a tisane/herbal tea. Best grow it in a pot, as it has a tendency for taking over. It looks a bit like mint, but with a strong lemony flavour.

I have it in the garden, but my piggies don't like it nor fresh mint either. Tastes are different...

I think I'll have a look out for this for myself.. it sounds lovely..

My boys wont go near Parsley.. in fact they both go the opposite way.. its very strange everyone elses seem to go mad for it grrrr

Hi,

I received some lovely free samples from Burns this morning - and I noticed that their Herbal Blend for rabbits contains lemon balm/melissa, among many other things. I guess if its good for rabbits its probably good for guineas!

Lemon balm spreads like mad .My mum used to put some leaves in the bottom of a sponge cake tin before she put the sponge mixture in and cooked it,also put some in a cup of tea to give it a nice lemon flavour.
My piggies love ground elder but wont eat leaves from the elder tree.
Anyone tried making elder flower "champagne" its is a lovely drink.

My Mom planted Spearmint, Peppermint and Lemon Balm in a similar area and they have kind of cross-bred in the middle making an interesting new specimen with the pure-breds on the outer rim.

I'm gonna ask Mom to bring over some Lemon Balm tomorrow when she comes and I'll get back to you on how mine like it (or not!). :))

OO elderflower I love that drink, made it last year but got soooo sticky I tend just to get the green bottle elderflower cordial, then i can enjoy it all year round :D
