We bought two female Guinea Pigs (Roni & Roxi). It turns out Roxi was pregnant and she had two girls. We had them all in the top half of a double hutch which was closed off and we had two boys below. The girls and their mum have always got on really well, but with the two babies getting bigger, they now have the double hutch to themselves, the boys have been moved to their own hutch.

Since they have had the entire hutch to themselves, the mother has started sniffing and trying to mount her two daughters and generally being mean to them, chasing them around the cage and such.

The booys used to live in the bottom half of the hutch and this is where the girls tend to spend most of their time. We obviously gave it a deep clean when the boys moved out, but could their scent still be around which is causing these issues?

Also, with the lovely spring weather arriving, we have started putting the girls outside for the first time. Do they start getting friskier at this time of year?

Is this type of behavious normal?

I don't have many facts to give out...but it sounds very normal. I think sows come in season every about 2 weeks? EXPERTS HELP! :))

What you describe sounds like mum is either asserting her dominance over her daughters or she's in season (pigs come into season every 15-17 days which can last up to 48hours http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/oestrus.htm

Spring does also seem to affect piggy behaviour, however she should calm down again & yes it is perfectly normal behaviour :)

I agree. It all sounds pretty normal to me. Just wait until you have more than one girl in season at the same time :))

I had the same concerns as you a few weeks ago. The advise given to me was that when a pig is asserting her dominance, it always looks worse to us than it does to the pig(s) involved.
