First time piggie mum - I have had 2 beautiful boars for the past 4 months, they are fab.

After a long time thinking of expanding our brood, I decided today to add another boar to our group.

We saw a boar we loved via a local breader and decided it would be lovely as we had the space. I had always been told the more guinea pigs the merrier, so didn't have a second thought.

To cut a long story short, our two original boars were fine initially, but as time went on they both began mounting the new boar, and eventually began chasing eachother around, chattering teeth and begging to fight with one another. It was almost as if they were fighting over the new boar, who thankfully was not harmed. Sadly, one of my two original boars has a small cut on his nose which I imagine he received during the squabble. This all took place within a 2 hour fully supervised period, so thankfully it was very short-lived.

I have immediately removed the new boar, who sadly I will be returning to the breeder first thing tomorrow (I don't have the space for 2 separate set ups for 2 pairs of piggies, and feel as he is still young he deserves a chance at being rehomed with one of his litter mates and a proper chance at a long happy life).

Having done a lot of research after the events of today, I feel utterly stupid. I am worried I have ruined my two original boars relationship (although, as soon as we removed the new boar and gave them some time out, they are now back in their cage together popcorning and being their normal selves as if nothing happened... Hopefully this is a good sign). Those who have had similar squabbles, do you think my two original boars will be ok now? We have removed all scent of the new piggie (changed all the bedding) and they seem normal, I just worry given their fight before that things now may not be the same.

I am so glad to have found this forum, and although I have made a very large mistake today, I have learnt so much from reading the posts here and I'm so grateful.

Huge slap on the wrist from me to me, great start to 2024.

Welcome to the forum

I’m sorry to hear this but please don’t feel stupid - you weren’t to know.
Hopefully there is no harm done now the new piggy has been removed, and they will go back to normal.
Just keep an eye on them, make sure their cage is big enough (5x2 c&c or 180x60), that there is multiple of every item and that all hides have two exits

Hello and welcome to the forum. Don’t feel silly. Years ago I added two boars to my original two and surprise, surprise they all fell out. I ended up with 4 cages. 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I’m sure your two will be ok now.

You weren't to know - but the breeder absolutely should have done!

Welcome to the forum.

You didn't know but I agree the breeder should have. I am sorry you weren't warned!

Thanks everyone, I still feel awful, both for my current piggies and for the little one we picked up. But I know I did the right thing.

The breeder took back the little one this morning, and was very apologetic, but doing my own research now I realise she should never have allowed us to take him as boar trios rarely seem successful. I hope he finds his forever home (she confirmed he will be going as a pair with another baby providing they rebond well after return).

An update on my original piggies - buttons & munchie - they are doing well. My husband did the right thing by separating them for a short period after the incident, deep cleaning their cage and creating a new neutral territory without the baby piggies scent and with multiple hides for them both. They spent most of last night in separate hides, but I his morning were back to munching hay, popcorning & sharing the same hide as normal so I hope this will continue as if nothing happened. I have further inspected the little cut on buttons' face, and it's a very shallow surface graze where some hair has been pulled out during the scuffle. No bleeding or signs of infection and he seems well in himself. I'll keep a close eye on both, but things seem ok.

I have well & truly learnt my lesson, but more importantly I have learnt so much about having a pair of boars, piggie behaviour & welfare that I feel I have come out more knowledgeable for the future which is great. I'm feeling quite sad today, more so because I caused so much upset for the 3 piggies, but I think I did the right thing in the end. Thanks for your reassurance, it's really helped.

Welcome to the forum.
You are by no means the only victim of misinformation about boars living together.
Hope every pig is settled and happy and the little one finds a good home.

Welcome to the forum. Buttons should be fine as piggies heal fast. I'm pleased that they are settled again. Looking forward to seeing some pigtures. I am slave to the beastie boys Dignified Sir George and his boisterous companion Mischievous Master Boris who send welcoming rumbles.

Welcome to the forum. Please don’t blame yourself. Please do feel free to blame the breeder who should have known this was a disaster waiting to happen and should not have sold you the baby, knowing what you had planned. I’m so relieved that your boys have settled back down after the excitement. And as you say, you now know so much more about boar behaviour. Piggies really are very complex little creatures.

This was right before I got peed on 😅 I forgot the pee pad and thought it would be fine for 5 minutes but buttons had other ideas.

Buttons is the chocolate brown at the back and munchie is the tricoloured at the front.

We adopted them from my mum, who sadly due to her health issues couldn't give them the time & regular clean outs & exercise they needed. Best thing we did was take them in as they are amazing!
