UGH, Its so cold out right now, below freezing and I feel so bad for the pigs. They are in a shed but even though its insultated its freezing in there. The water bottle was frozen this morning. I have a heat emitter for the pigs but I checked the thermometer and its only keep it at about 5 celcius. I warmed up the pigs snugglesafe and they are on it now in their hidebox. I just feel so bad that I cant bring them inside. I wish I could! I have terrible allergies to them and I worry if I bring them in they will get a chill when they go back out. I stuffed their hidebox with hay and there is fleece inside and a fleece blanket on top of them. So they are nestled in there right now but there was no wheeking when I went out as they are too cold to even want to have their veggies. ARUGH!

I hate this! And this freezing weather is supposed to last all week. I even tried plugging in an electric heater and it didn't make any difference in there. The heat emitter works better but barely.

Is anyone else in this situation? I feel really terrible....

i have a carpet and curtains and a heater in my shed and it stays pretty warm

Hi Claire,

Where is your carpet? My shed is quite large and I think the heat just escapes despite it being somewhat insultated. I hung 2 heavy blankets over the door and inside the cage I've hung a wool blanket over half their cage. I am so worried.

Is it possible to take hayfever tablets to control the allergies so that they can come indoors? I know for people with rats that heyfever tablets help alot. There's probably other too to help allergies. (:

Also, does anyone know how cold they can stand it? They have been outside always but I don't remember it being this cold last winter.

Except Ping is only 8 wks old...I'm worried!

I take Echinacea drops regularly because I have an allergy to my friend's cats; it works!

I regularly take reactine 20mg because I'm allergic to my cat but I'm going to just try the pigs inside and also take a 1st generation allergy med like benadryl. I'll bring up one of my hepa air filters as well from the basement and run it in the spare room, maybe that will help. I just really worry about the baby Ping.

i have my carpet on the floor and hoover it daily its great also duvet stapled to the walls works great

HI all,

They are inside now actually right behind me on a table. They are eating apples. I have to head out to the doctors but when I come back I'm moving a wooden hutch I have into the shed for them. They were in a large plastic cage but it doesn't have the insultation it needs. I think the hutch will be much better. I'm going to put the heat emitter in the hutch but of course where they can't touch it. I can already feel my asthma starting. CHipy smells very strong. lol.

A wooden hutch sounds much better as it will be more insulated. I keep my piggies outdoors due to me being asthmatic and my hubby being allergic to them. They have insulated covers and hutch huggers around their hutch, snugglesafes, domes and plenty of hay and they are fine :) You could buy the a bottle snug or an old sock works just as well to stop the bottle from freezing up x

bubble rap and then a sock works great :))

A hutch will provide a much better home for your piggies. They should not really be in temperatures below 11 degrees. x

Not sure about where you live but here in the uk you can get cheap heaters that use penny's per hour heatwise,we use them in our sheds which are lined etc etc where the animals have sleeping boxes stuffed with straw etc,,the attached run has plastic sheeting on it that we drop down when the temp's get low,it keeps the inside of the run about 5 degrees warmer than outside and on the cctv the hairy mob can be seen outside in the run during the night.

What are these heaters called please? I live in the UK.

P.S. 'Hairy mob' really made me smile. :))

I used oil filled radiators. They are really good, just plug it in. Can't remember if you said you had electricity in your shed though. xx

You can make your own hutch snuggle out of this kinda stuff...

It's like foil bubble wrap and will help to keep heat inside the hutch.

Hi,

well, they are in the hutch now in the shed and its nice and warm inside the enclosed side of it. My husband attached the ceramic heat emitter inside the hutch and its keeping that side at 20 Celcius. I just have to keep checking to make sure now they don't overheat! From one extreme to another it seems. I'm soo plugged up now I feel like my head is going to explode. I have to take a shower now to get rid of all the allergens and to clear out my nose! Gross! Plus I'm freezing now!

I went out and checked them and its still nice and 20 degrees celcius in their enclosed side of the hutch. I'm so relieved. I'm still plugged up but the shower really helped. I'm going out later to see how they are. If it stays at this temp then they don't even need their snugglesafe. :)

for those in the uk the likes of Argos,B&Q,Homebase and the likes have all sold at some point in time heaters such as those mentioned,I think our last one came from Argos several years ago,and yes my hairy herd are spoilt with electricity in their shed/run,now when it gets really cold we also have a halogen heater, you should see them out in the run warming their little feet, quite amusing.

Thanks Allan,

I just went out this morning and the temp dropped to about 10 celcius, very cold night, so I stuck their snugglesafe in there with them. We are buying a thermometer to regulate the heat emitter today as when it gets warmer I don't want them getting too hot.

I'll have to google this halogen heater you spoke about.

The Factory Warehouse was selling them last year(Dec08-Jan09) for about £10,three bars and it ocilates(bet i've not spelt that one right),heats the place up a treat,It has a trip switch underneath so if the piggies knock the stand over it turns off and stays off.
