It's weird but never thought I'd say this!

I have loved fleece & so have the girls, however since coming back from my hols to 2 of them with mange mites :( I have had them on newspaper & hay ever since so I can thoroughly strip & clean their C & C daily. I have discovered how much easier this is :) No washing, no hoovering, just bin bags & pop the newspapers in & spray & clean down the correx, it's bliss :)

So much easier, but am I being selfish thinking I might keep them this way? Does anyone do this, just newspaper & hay? Is it a good idea to maybe just pop a bit of fleece in their sleep areas?

How long before the mange mites will no longer be active? It's been 10 days nearly since their Stronghold treatment at the vet's; she said if there are no new lesions then they don't need a 2nd treatment with Stronghold & to change their cage daily, which I have.

I think it would be nice to have just a small sleeping area with some fleece, just because it's comfy and it gives them that choice,
I'm always wary with hay just after having a bad experience in the past where my foster pig got hay in his eye and it clouded over, however it did get much better and i know lots of people do use just hay and newspaper,
I've always found that hay smells pretty bad though when wet and newspaper gets so soggy !

But whatever floats your goat... or guinea pig.

I used to have just plain newspaper and hay, until Pickles got haypokes... Twice! You could always do half and half if you don't want them to miss out on the fleecy-ness. I guess it's worth just playing around with a few different arrangements and see what works best for you and the pigs.

i use newspaper and hay but had fleece in the bedroom sleeping bits, but the boys just wee all over it so i just put extra hay for them to sleep in. the girls still have fleece in there beds though, they have more sense and only wee in 2 areas unlike the messy boys!

I used fleece and THOUGHT I loved it-until they kept burrowing underneath it, they would tip their food bowls up doing it and it drove me mad!

I then decided to put them on newspaper and hay-it was ment to be temporary and I was going to try fleece again.i never did though and never will-they LOVE being on hay and to me it's more natural for them. Also its SO easy to just roll it all up when I clean them out. They have their snuggle sacks which they lie on top if when they arent inside. Piggys love foraging and they can do this as much as they like living on hay. When my c&c cage is built I will still never go back to fleece, I certainly don't miss washing it!

I got fed up with fleece too. I tried many different beddings after and decided shredded paper with newspaper underneath was the best option for me.

The boys sleep in their cozy tunnel for comfort or even on just the paper itself. They seem happy enough with it and it only takes me half an hour instead of the 2 hours megazorb took me to clean out.

That's interesting! Where do you get the shredded paper you use? :)

I prefer hay and newspaper with sawdust in the pee corners. I do have a c and c bit but it drives me mental.

I think when I have the hutch up I will do hay in the bottom and Fleece on top.....but I do loathe the washing that entails!

I get it from the offices my mum works at. They have black bags full of it they end up just throwing out so I've decided to recycle. They leave it out for me. :)

If theres not enough though I just shred up any other paper like reciepts, newspaper or plain paper. :)

I think whatever works best for you.

I use vetbed and then in my hay area i have newspaper and hay so they can tunnel down into the hay or make a nest with it (or eat it!) this is the best way for me and i wouldn't have it any other way :))

Certainly food for thought, i sometimes get fed up with washing the fleece too. I was thinnking about hay and newspaper and maybe one end, just under half, being fleece.
Does the newspaper get soggier quicker without the fleece on top?

I only used fleece for a day. After being so excited about getting it, I spent hours strapped to my sewing machine making cage liners and small pads to put in busy areas, but the next day took it all out and put down carefresh. I just couldnt stand the look of the poop on the fleece and the stains from the wee even after one day. I would have to change the fleece every day to be happy with it.

I do like the carefresh but its too expensive to use all the time, so am thinking of newspaper and hay for my 2 boys. Even when I did have the fleece Alfie loved to sit in his hay box :)

I alternate between fleece, and hay & newspaper. When I use the hay and newspaper, they have beds to lie on in the sleeping areas.

The boys don't seem to mind either, so when it's warm I use hay & newspaper as I think that's probably cooler for them.
