Hi all, my Reggie (12 weeks), fell from a height of around less than 1 metre.
My boys live in the bluebell hutch and I have an around 3-4 inch wooden bar across the large ramp gap to try and stop things like this but obviously it didn’t work well enough.
Winston, my other boy, was sat across the walkway so as Reggie popcorned behind him he fell to the bottom.

He seemed to land on his feet, I checked him over as well as I could. Teeth (I also gave them a wiggle, which didn’t show anything), lips, legs etc. and he showed no signs of any pain/discomfort.
He then came inside and had his dinner and again seemed fine and he could walk perfectly on his own.

I obviously feel horrible as I was aware of the possibility and I am also really worried he has any internal damage, my anxiety definitely does not help.
Aside from the time now, tomorrow my vet is closed and my parents are busy so I would not be able to take him anyway, especially as he is acting fine (my parents certainly aren’t anti-vet, they love animals and my boys as much as me but as I said they have plans tomorrow)

I am wondering if there are any specific things I would be looking out for or seeing in a piggie if there was any underlying issue.
I am also wondering if come Monday and he is fine, will he still need in for a check up? Again I am not opposed to going into a vet, but I don’t have my license and both my parents work, although I would be able to make time if needed.

This is not my first fall, and when I was younger there was one from a much higher height (not due to mishandling, but I put him in an unsafe location and turned my back for a second), and he didn’t go to the vet and continued to live for many years (certainly not excusable, and I still feel bad about it to this day). But as I have gotten older and started studying animal medicine in school, I am much more cautious.

Hi

Just keep an eye on him over the coming day but if you do not see any signs of him not being quite bright or not moving or eating well, then I would not worry and cancel the vet appointment unless you feel strongly about a vet check and peace of mind.

Thanks, I will keep a close eye on him. Thankfully he had a very big personality so I feel a change in behaviour or anything will be easier to spot, although they are great at hiding such.

I still feel terrible, but my first plan of action today is to get the hole closed/covered up and maybe a couple extra treats for the boys.
Thanks again.

Great advice already given. I think it’s just a watch and wait situation but it’s still nerve wracking, I know.

It's always scare for any caring owners. Thankfully, the majority of falls don't cause any lasting harm.

Especially young guinea pigs have a nose for finding all the dodgy corners you would rather not before you, plus any dodgy places you were not even aware of. Just keep at plugging any holes and eventually you have found them all (you hope). There is always another inventive soul, though...

I hope your piggy is still doing well today and hasn't suffered any ill effects from his fall.

He has been fine all day, which I am very relieved by but will still be keeping a close eye on him for a couple days.
The landing now has a much higher piece of wood than before which would need some superman strength to move, I am sure he will find something else to fall down or get stuck on but we are all okay for now.
