Hi,

My guinea pigs have both got an eye issue. Their eye is swollen with some very protruding yellow thing sticking out of the corner. At first, I thought they could have hay stuck in their eye but now I'm guessing it's an infection seeing as it has gone from one to the other. Could it be hay stuck in?

I have a vets appointment on l Monday as that was the first available. What can I do in the meantime? I've disinfected their hutch . I don't want to try and help their eye but make it worse.

One's eye has gone cloudy but the other hasn't.

A cloudy eye means it has started to ulcerate. It may very well be that they have poked their eyes with hay - it is a very common injury.
Eye injuries are considered as emergencies and are usually seen within 24 hours in the UK due to how quickly they can deteriorate. Personally, I would call an out of hours vet today given it is quite a while to wait until Monday.
The vet will need to add a dye to the eye to check the injury. Treatment is then antibiotic eye drops and oral painkillers should also be prescribed. We also recommend a lubricating gel to be applied along side (but not at the same time as the antibiotic drop) to help aid recovery.

Thank you for your reply.

So sorry about your piggies eye, I really would try to find a vet sooner if you can. Eye treatment is the same for guinea pigs as dog and cats when it comes to injuries/infection so you don’t need an exotic vet just a good general vet who can prescription AB eye drops and tear gel and remove any foreign objects under the eye lid etc

I hope you have managed to see a vet? Two of my piggies both had eye injuries. The vet saw them that day and both had grass seeds stuck under their eyelids which the vet managed to get out. Both girls were prescribed antibiotic eye drops and corneal repair gel and both girls had recovered within a week of treatment

Hi all. Thanks for all your replies. I thought I'd let you know that they have recovered nicely. The vet pulled out a grass seed from each of them on Sunday morning. One of them has an ulcer sadly, but the cloudiness has disappeared.I will be checking my hay much more thoroughly from now on! Thanks for your help.

Wow - two at once - that's proper bad luck! We all get a hay poke now and again but you win hands down! So pleased you could get them sorted. Now go out and get a lottery ticket or something because the universe sure does owe you something 😅
