Hi
I took Herbie to the vets 2 week ago when I noticed his eye had turned blue and cloudy. I was given Isathal and lubricant drops to use for a week. I got check up appointment again last week which the eye was somewhat better and has gone back to its normal brown colour however the ulcer mark is still there. The vet said the eye wasn’t really an ulcer anymore but it had turned into more of a scab. I bought another tube of Isathal and was told to continue for 2 more weeks. The vet also said it wasn’t affecting his sight.
Since the eye returned back to normal colour there hasn’t been much improvement in the white spot fading. I’m wondering what the next step is if it doesn’t disappear seen as his sight is apparently fine. Going into third week of Isathal now (pic taken today)
Thanks

I’ve not had anything like that happen with any of the haypokes my lot have had.
If his eye is otherwise healthy, I would not think there would be a next step as such. It might just be the same as being left with a scar.
Do the next two weeks of treatment and then see what your vet says.

I’ve had guinea pigs for years but Herbie is the first to have a hay poke. The vet said they don’t usually heal like his has, and it’s almost trying to over heal, hence the scab. Thanks anyway I’ll get him re-booked in after the treatment.

That’s is unusual. Usually a week or two of isathal and it’s like new again.
Let us know how it goes

Just an update - Herbies eye is still looking the same :( I had him back to the vets on Friday who has now prescribed a different form of eye drop they won’t have in stock until tomorrow. I can’t remember the name but it’s a drop actually for human use. Then after this if no improvement they have mentioned the possibility of needing to remove it whilst he is under anaesthetic. The idea of that stresses me out, I had a bad experience with this a few years back and my guineapig died. Herbie is acting totally fine, good appetite and other than the white spot his eye is healthy and still has good vision. Hoping these new drops are going to work otherwise I’m very unsure what to do.

Why would they need to remove the eye? He can live quite happily with a little spot on it! We have a piggy who has hair growing out of his eye. It looks alarming but it doesn’t bother Norris x
Hi,
Sorry I didn’t make it clear but they mean remove the white spot rather than the eye! I’ve been to the vets so many times and spent somewhat of a fortune now I feel to keep going back until is disappears but just don’t seem to be getting anywhere :( I want to do what’s right but yeah he just seems totally happy, any other guinea pigs of mine that have been poorly have shown signs with not eating / drinking, staying in corners. He’s doing nothing weird at all. I’m just hoping these new drops next week clear it up x

Our zhenzhu have the same problem months ago. Perhaps you can try 氯霉素滴眼液(Chloramphenicol Eye Drops for human)to the eye. 1 drop 1 time. 2 or 3 times a day. In our Chinese guinea community, its a very useful medicine.
You can't use it more than a week. Otherwise piggy will get used to it , and it will not work next time.
Let me show you our case my friend.

By the way ,before you drop Chloramphenicol Eye Drops for human, remember use physiological saline to wash piggy's eye first.
Just my advice For reference only.
