Hi,

My guinea pig is poorly. She seems to have a swollen eye with some sort of liquid coming out which is causing it to close.

Any iideas to what this is and what to do?

Guinea pigs have milk glands around their eyes that secrete a white liquid all day long, but a healthy guinea pig keeps this cleaned off the eye. If the eye is swollen, your guinea pig could have an eye infection just like humans. It could be conjunctivitis or he/she may have gotten something in his/her eye. You can get antibiotic opthalmic ointment. However, a vet should clean it out and look at it to make sure he/she doesn't have something in it or his/her eye hasn't been poked w/ something. Occasionally, a guinea pig will run into hay sticking out of a hay rack or hay pile and poke his/her eye. See a vet.

I am with Lyndsey on this one.A vet visit is called for asap.Any swelling of an eye should be checked out.As Lyndsey said,it could be a number of things, infection, foriegn body in the eye,a scratch on the eyeball ,or possibly,a tumour at the back of the eye.It is most likely something simple and easily treated, but you do need to have it checked.

Hi,

eye problems must be checked. I have boars & have had some serious eye injuries (fight related!) After injury, loss of sight or scarring can occur & although the pig will adjust & be absolutely fine afterwards, you want to minimise the chance of this happening.

Your piggie may not like having a light shone in their eye or dyes to check the cornea but it is worth it for your peace of mind & your pig's comfort.

Let us know how it goes xx

if you can't get to a vet till monday i would gently bathe the eye with warm salty water and keep an eye(no pun intended) on it. hoping your little piggy gets to the vet and her eye is alright. when zoe or the bunny gets sore eyes we were told to put a dab of CHLOROPTSONE eye ointment it's for dogs and cats but it melts on contact of the eye. you could gently look into the eye and see if there are any bits of hay in there and gently remove them O0 sending hugs and healing vibes to your sweet angel :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I was also warned that an eye problem with a piggy must be check immediately. Sometimes could be linked with respiratory problem which are often fatal in guineas. I don't mean to scare you, but it is a must to have that checked. My piggy had an eye problem as soon as I got him at a month and a half old. It was watery and closing. It turned out to be an eye infection, which your piggy may very well have. All it took was a quick eye wash from me and cream for his eye for a week. It went away! I'm sure your piggy will be fine, but I would get an eye problem checked quickly. Good luck and please let us know how you make out! Love to you and your piggy.... :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks for your help! I went to check on her this morning and now the other eye has shut over and the other one is still swollen.

Think I will need to try bathin it in salty water until I can get her to a vet.

:( :( :(

It sounds like she might have conjunctivits and she will need antibiotics. Let us know how you get on and good luck.

Cold tea is really good for bathing eyes. Make sure the water is boiled and left to cool . Get your piggy to a vet asap

Sometimes your local pharmacy will carry opthalmic antibiotic ointment. You can apply it 3 - 4 times a day until you get to the vet.

Eye problems need looking at asap, if its a weekend then visit the vet at weekends

you g/p will be confused and may have difficulty getting around and even eating!

hope it sorted soon

Nx

ps also if getting any medication from a chemist it is important to let them know it is for an animal and not human!

Never use antibiotic eye ointment on a gp unless prescribed by a vet.Gps are very antibiotic sensitive and anything that is put into the eye will get into the bloodstream.

the ointment was prescribed to me by a vet and i was told anytime the piggies/bunny or any of the animals had a sore eye/s to apply some. when i have used this ointment it has not affected the animal in question. anyway try warm water with salt and gently rinse the eye. sending hugs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping all went well at the vets. please keep us posted. O0

if its a weekend then visit the vet at weekends

Vets aren't open on weekends apart from emergency ones

I hope it went well at the vets :) And the salty water works, I remember my mom using it on my hamster when I was 7.
