this is the little 6 week old sow that i have taken in. she weighs 347g and is eating and drinking well. she appears to be blind and has tiny eyes. the one eye is very tiny indeed and has a white circle (like a film) around the outer edge of her eye. there only seems to be a very small area in the centre of her eye that does not have the white colour. her other eye appears to be going the same way. she is happy in herself - popcorning all the time. she doesn't seem to have any other health problems. i shall be taking her to the vet for a check up but was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what this could be. any advice would be appreciated.

She's beautiful!

If her eyes are very small she may have something called micropthalmia where the eyes do not form properly and leave poor vision/blindness but the whiteness suggests cataracts or other eye damage/scarring.

Worth getting her checked but in all probability she will just learn to live with her disability. Guinea pigs don't have great vision anyway so she will learn to work without it. My Hamish is partly sighted with micropthalmia and he does fine. I know others with completely blind piggies like SportBilly's Megan who manage fine.

Just out of interest what vet do you use as I am in Wolverhampton too....

thanks for that info. and yes - she is beautifulx) i have 2 of her sisters too and they are just as prettyx)
i use straitons in penkridge. i have done for over 30 years and would not go anywhere else. it's straight up the stafford road and into penkridge. i normally see a vet called craig - he is great and knows exactly what he is doing. but all of them are great to be honest. not bad prices either.

Agree with MerryPip Sally.
Have a quick look at this, may be useful:

She is adorable and is in fab hands with you, can imagine you spoiling these piggies rotten like your other pets :(|)
Has hubby forgiven you yet ?/ :x

it took some convincing for him to let me have some more - and a bit of an argument! but when i was asked if i could take these 3 it felt that fate had played a part in it. he's a big softy really - and i catch him taking sneaky peeks at them - he just pretends he isn't interested. mind you we are both spending tomorrow altering hutches and adding ramps and hay lofts so he does love them really:)):)) you are welcome anytime to call round and see them. you too will fall in love:(|)

actually i wondered about micropthalmia myself but everything i read semmed to point at lethals so i wasn't too sure

i'll be keeping a close eye on you:))

I was going to say microphthalmia also.
I'm sure she will be fine and like the others have said will learn to do things her own way.

Her eyes look like my lethal piggy's Captain Darling, he has Microphthalmia but I suppose other guinea pigs can get it too? He has tiny eyes just like that, but being blind doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest!

are the other pigs ok with him. i was a little concerned as to whether she might get pushed around by her 2 sisters as she gets older. also, does it cause them to have other problems i.e infections or runny eyes etc

here's a pictures that shows his eye:

The others are good with him, they seem to be very patient with him. If she is just blind that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Daling has other issues as well, he is also deaf, but despite this he seems to get on fine!

On of my girls has it in one eye, shes top boss pig! :))
Shes a tort and white also.

that's great to hear they do ok. i was a little concerned for her. the others do seem fine with her at the moment. she is always first to the food when i put their veggies in etc so hopefully she will do as well as yours. i don't think she is deaf so hopefully it is just her sight. thanks everyone for reassuring me
