Hi all

Hope you’re all doing ok.

Looking for some eye advice if I may!

Last Wednesday, Betty’s eye looked like it had something in it (possibly a tiny husk of hay or similar?), this was in the corner of her eye (near her nose). So we took her to our usual exotic vets who were able to see her the same day. They thoroughly examined her, flushed her eye, used the dye etc, looked through a contraption in the dark and did various tests.

They couldn’t find any foreign objects but with the equipment he used he confirmed she had a slight ulceration, I think he said near the cornea. The vet said it didn’t look look infected.

They advised giving her isathal drops twice a day which we’re doing. We also added some plain tear gel (carbomer) once a day, always several hours between the meds.

Tonight it looks as if the mark which was in the corner of her eye has moved to the centre and I’m confused!

I’m wondering if there was an item in her eye which was never fully removed? Or do ulcerated eyes sometimes look like there’s something still on the surface?! Or could it be the drops or gel?

Sorry if I’m being dim. Happy to take her back but he was quite sure there was nothing in her eye, and if this is part of the normal healing process then I’d rather not put her through the stress of taxi rides etc. The eye drops were for 5 days but we have enough to give some more days if needed.

I was going to take them both for a half yearly check up next week or the week after anyway but maybe should bring that forward.

I’ll show a picture from when we got her back from the vets where it looks like the issue was in the corner and another one (with the human hand in it) from tonight where it looks like it’s moved.

Does anyone have experience of this? I know only a vet can say for sure and I will also send him photos or go in, but if anyone has any views I’d really appreciate that.

Just to add that she seems fine in herself (which I know doesn’t always mean much).

…and the messy bit under her eye is from where the gel fell (have been trying to gently wipe that off without bothering her). It’s a bit of an art getting the stuff to go in the right place first time and we haven’t quite mastered it yet…

Thanks

Hi, sorry to hear your piggy has a poorly eye. I can't say what it is in the eye, bedding perhaps?

As for getting the drops in, I find putting the gel on a cotton bud and placing it on the inner corner of the eye helps. The piggy will close the eye, then I gently wipe the cotton tip along the lash line to the outer corner. On the odd occasion I have managed to free hand it straight from the tube but that pig had a lot of patience.

Hi

That looks to me like something stuck on the surface of the eye, perhaps a piece of hay or bedding? Your vet or a nurse may be able to safely remove it for you, which will greatly add to your piggy's comfort and remove the source of the trouble.

Please apply any lubricant either about 30-60 minutes after the antibiotic eye drops/gel (to allow them to be fully absorbed) or 3 times a day (as close to an 8 hour rhythm as you can practically get without losing any sleep). Your vet is obviously considering the injury as fairly mild.

Thanks Engel and Wiebke, much appreciated.

I’ll get in touch with the vet now. To the naked eye it’s not quite clear what’s happening! Photo this morning seems similar. 755982DD-3B71-46D8-8CEB-4AAD5D720940.webp

They’re on fleece bedding, so if it’s an object in there then I guess it must be hay.

Thanks again.

There is something decaying floating on the eye surface. The eye itself is still a bit opaque and may still be not fully healed.

Thanks Wiebke and Engel, happy to say the offending small piece of hay husk has been removed and her eye is looking better already.

We’re continuing with the isathal and plain tear gel for a few more days (thanks for the extra guidance re th tear gel, really helpful) but hopefully she’ll be fine.

Here she is relaxing in her pudding bed while Winnie photobombs.
