Hi guys, i am new to this forum mainly on here for some desperate need of advice, so Sunday night i had my piggy out and she were perfectly fine no signs of anything out of the ordinary, upon waking up Monday morning and putting her into her snuggle pod, i noticed a white speckle on the tip of her eye with a grey like clouding in her eye also. Of course i did not wait around and got an emergency appointment at the vets. So my story, managed to get her in at 1610, where the vet he given her an eye examination with some sort of fluid which makes any ulcers clear and he said there is a large definitive ulcer in the eye, he tried to have a scrape over the eye to see if anything were in the eye and he said he removed a microscopic spike from the eye, i now have 2 lots of medication which I'm guessing on is anti inflammatory and one is painkillers. With two lots of eye drops too, my worry is he wanted another follow up appointment 24 hours after the medication has been given to me so is back in the vets today at 1630? is this sufficient time for the meds to get to work? i would expect at least a week of treatment to see any improvement or deterioration? Basically I'm asking for anyone who has had anything similar the time scale to which i should be making the awful decision of surgery as my vet said today once he has examined her we will have to decide?! Thank you for any replies. Fingers crossed she gets well soon! shes barely 18 months old!

If the ulcer is deep and extensive the vet is being safe asking for a review so soon. Eyes deteriorate very quickly but treatment also starts to work quickly so the vet wants to see if the treatment is at least starting to work and to ensure they eye isn’t getting worse. If the eyeball itself has been punctured then things can deteriorate rapidly and the eye can need removal promptly if it can’t be saved and to prevent infection spreading. I’d say the vet is just being cautious and appropriately managing your expectations.

Thanks for the advice, i will update after my consultation at 16:10, never been so anxious in my entire life. Poor thing, who would have thought something they need in their diet can cause such a problem!

It’s an occupational hazard of lounging in hay. Some piggies are just more accident prone than others I’m afraid. Good luck later at the vets.

Just thought I would post a little picture of her so we all know who are talking about. Her sister in the background is the mischievous one. Luckily she's always been in good health just a little reddening of her foot but some epsom salts seem to be helping. Me and my partner have no idea what we would do without this little madam!

Hi guys, so after an anxious 24 hours the vet has advised us to keep her on her medication for another couple of days, even thought the greying of her eye seems to be going the ulcer in the eye he said looks no different although i think it has? I have woken up this morning and i think personally it looks smaller once again. Another vet appointment on Thursday before the dreaded decision for eye removal has to be made. We both currently have our fingers crossed we wake up tomorrow and this medication does the trick! Anyone who has had to go through this is a war hero! on edge every time i approach the c&c cage!

Really hope it’s looking better by then and it’s not needed! 🤞🤞Healing vibes being sent from me and my three piggles :)

Welcome to the forum.
Well done for spotting the problem so quickly and getting prompt treatment.
You sound as if you have a very thorough and caring vet.
Hope the treatment works quickly

So... been monitoring her and her eye for the past 48 hours, I've got to say she looks to have massively improved can still see a imperfection in the eye itself (almost like a little puncture hole) and still little greying of the eye in general but the ulcer is no longer to be seen and you can finally see the white around the eye itself! Her appointment is at 1430 so i do not want to get ahead of myself however i think she is on the mend. Will have to wait and see what the vet says later! will keep you all posted. Thank you for all your support and positive vibes!

WELL! WHERE TO BEGIN! Woke up this morning after a sleepless anxious night, took her to the vets, then the vet comes out of the practice. the vet put her down on the floor (in her carrier) i could sense the positivity coming from behind his face mask. He held his arms up high, and just said to me "miracles do happen" i was completely overjoyed. The full report is that there is no ulcer left in her eye, the greying is the antibiotics fighting the last of the infection and the BEST NEWS OF ALL! She's got full eyesight in the eye! so she's not even turned out blind! this is amazing and i couldn't ask for a better outcome! Thank you all for your positivity couldnt believe my eyes/ears. The vet was so pleased however i was just as overjoyed i couldnt contain my happiness! Least to say, any of you going through what i currently have, get in touch! ill happily tell you about my story and my piggy! Shes got a follow up in 10 days time to which the vet just wants to see her because shes just too cute (and to give her the all clear of course) Stay safe everyone! and have a fantastic Thursday evening!

Just read this, that’s fab news she’s made such a great recovery, we could all do with a happy ending atm, brilliant 😄
