Could I please ask for some opinions on the following?

My 2.5 years old piggie had an eye injury. We don't know how. I took her to an exotic vet who said her eye ball collapsed and either we need to pay for £900 for a removal surgery or have her put down. It is shocking for us as this piggie is my daughter's emotional support. However, with the risks of the operation itself we find it hard to make a decision. I can take her for a second opinion tomorrow but that vet is not an exotic vet but they do treat small animals too. We are very stressed and find it hard to figure out the right decision. I enclose some pictures in case anybody has seen an injury like this. Please be kind in your answers, i find it hard to cope with it all. Thank you!

Thank you. I am in Worcester UK but I can't drive so long distance trips are difficult. I will look through the list and enquire. Thank you.

I’m so sorry you are in this position. All operations have risks but I think this type of operation has a very good outcome. Shes relatively young so that would be in her favour too.

@Piggies&buns is it the case that eyes can be treated by a non exotic vet as they are the same for many species of animals? Maybe that would bring the cost down too as exotics do charge more.

Will the vet let you pay in instalments?

Good luck. ❤️

And don't tell todays vet how much you were quoted for the operation.

I wonder if a PDSA type vet could help?

I’m sorry to hear of her poorly eye

Weepweeps is correct. Eyes are the same across al species so they don’t need to be seen by an exotic vet. However when it comes to a surgery you would want a vet at least knowledgeable and experienced in surgery on guinea pigs

Thank you All. I took her to our usual vet (not exotic). They confirmed that the eye ball is burst. However, they said there is no inflammation or infection in her eye and it seems the eye is trying to heal itself naturally. No discharge or anything. They said there is no sign of any cycts or tumors in the eye or in fact the whole head. They advised against operation as they said it would be simply esthetic which is too much of an unnecessary risk. They were flabbergasted about the idea of putting her down. They said that since she eats, drinks, plays, behaves as usual there is no sign of severe pain to justify putting her down. No weight loss either. They suggested one week of painkiller medication and eyedropps, monitoring weight and go back for a check up in a week. 🙏
