We recently had gotten a New Guinea pig from PetSmart, after a couple of days he had a very dirty eye on one side so we had the petsmart take him to their vet, they told us he had a small respiratory infection and would keep him on medication until he healed. After a few days, one of our other Guinea pigs, Piggy, had a serious eye infection break out. We took him to the vet and they checked if he had any cuts on his eyes, he doesn’t, and they prescribed him an oral inflammatory medication, the next day (today) it looked like it had gotten a bit worse, and so we took him back and he got prescribed an eye cream for it. Now, another one of our guinea pigs looks like he is getting it. When we took Piggy to the vet, they did a general check up and said his lungs, gut, tummy and vowels and stuff sounds fine. He is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping regularly, but when we take him to the vet they don’t even say what it is, or even try to identify it at all. They don’t know what is causing it but won’t even try to figure it out, just give us medicine and see if it works. We know piggy just got the medication and we haven’t given it a big chance yet, but we are worried. What should we do? The pictures I’m attaching are from Sunday, his eyes are much worse now and the inside pick part of his eye is very swollen too.

Poor piggy - that does look painful.

Have you been given a specific eye ointment?
How often are you supposed to apply it and what is it called?

If they have checked for cuts and ulcers then hopefully the eye ointment will help, but it may take a few days of regular application to see an improvement.

I would also start with daily weighing at the same time each day to keep an eye on any weight loss which might indicate that your piggy is not eating well and needs a further check up.

Hi!

OUCH! That looks very sore indeed!
What medication and ointment has your vet exactly prescibed?

Please take your piggies back to have them seen. You have obviously been sold a piggy with a highly infectious conjunctivitis.
Vet cost should be covered by the shop. How piggy savvy is their vet? Most general vets working for no frills outfits like instore vets generally aren't. Please don't let yourself be fobbed off; it is your customer rights for having been sold damaged ware.

I assume that you are located in the USA or in Canada in view of you mentioning petsmart?
Could you please add your country, state or province to location in your account details so we can tailor any advice and recommendation to US conditions and brands straight away with just a quick look to the left as we jump between lots of different threads in a day.
