My new guinea pig, Scone, from my local animal shelter/rescue, has some goop/crust near her eye that I noticed today during vegetable time. I've read about this cleaning liquid they sometimes secrete, and I am wondering if it's just dried cleaning fluid? Or if this is an infection. It is only on her left eye, her right eye is completely normal. She is just as food driven as she has been since I got her, and her poops and pees are normal, and she is eating and drinking normally. Apologies for the image being a link, and if that is not allowed, double apologies! I can't seem to figure out how to upload an image in any thread haha, I am brand new to the site, and I can't find any options to upload files.

Hi

This looks like spilled and dried transparent tear fluid. Its job is to wash out anything stuck in the eye (the same as human eyes) but a constantly watering eye, especially in combination with being indrawn (i.e. in pain) can point to an eye injury, which should be ideally seen by a vet within a day of you noticing.

The eye cleaning fluid is milky white and is usually absorbed by the tear duct but it dries into white blobs when it spills over.

Blueish/greyish gunk is the result of an ulcerating eye infection. Please see a promptly. Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly. The sooner they are seen and treated, the quicker and easier do they heal. Blood in the eye counts as an emergency.

Yellow/green/orange mucus crusts are a symptom of well developed un- or underteated upper respiratory tract infections. Forum members usually see a vet long before things get to this stage.

Okay, so it seems like for now I should keep an eye on it? It doesn't look actively wet/leaky. Just some boogies. She hasn't been sneezing or coughing, and there's not been any discharge from her nose or other eye. I'll continue to monitor throughout the day.

Should I wipe it off? Scone is still pretty new (I've only had her a week) so I don't want to pick her up and wipe it off unless it's necessary. I already feel guilty having to take her out during deep cleaning lol

The crusts will come off on their own.

It looks like whatever had got into the eye (likely some hay dust) has been washed out but sometimes a piece of hay can get stuck under the upper lid, scratch the eye surface and can cause an infection. Just keep an eye on it but please don't panic or hover obsessively because any injury will only be superficial and won't track into the eye. It still needs to be seen by a vet if you notice signs of discomfort or infection. With a little luck, whatever was in the eye, has however been washed out.

Okay, thank you so much! Their hay was pretty dusty this morning despite my efforts, so it's probably dust. I'll definitely keep an eye out. You have eased some of my worries haha

Hi all, similar question here as well. Our little Tootsie girl is behaving great but has a little crust on her eye. We just noticed today. Does this look like dried tear fluid? She is our first and we haven't seen what an infection in the eye looks like before. Would love any thoughts. Thanks!
