Hi all,

I just got a female guinea pig yesterday! She is currently quarantine from my other guinea just so I can inspect if there is any illnesses. I notice she has 2 very bulgy eyes. Is it just from her being afraid or its normal? Should I seek a vet's attention?20170907_161116.webp 20170907_161045.webp

Its hard to say from those pictures but I am under the impression that being afraid would not affect the size of the eyes. Are they even? i.e. are they both bulging an equal amount or does one protrude more than the other

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for the fast reply. They seem to be bulging evenly. That's should be fine right?

I can't say one way or the other mostly because I haven't see your piggy but also I am not a vet. However, I would expect, if there were a problem that both sides would not be even. When I had a piggy with suspected elongated tooth roots one eye was ever so slightly protruding more than the other. It wasn't easy to see, I had to flatten her hair around her face and look square on to see it properly

Hi and welcome!

If both eyes are the same, then you do not need to worry. Some piggies can have naturally "bulgy" eyes in a rather narrow and ratty looking face.

My Rhosyn looked very similar at first; she was a very sweet natured lady. Eventually her face did fill out a bit more and her eyes were no longer quite as prominent.

You only need to see a vet promptly if one eye is bulging or is retracted. The first is caused by an infection/abscess behind the eye and the other usually by the pain from an eye injury.

Hi & welcome to the forum :) Can you update your location on your profile please? Sometimes their eyes can bulge if they have elongated tooth roots & an abscess brewing, but usually it only affects one eye at a time. She might need to see a piggy savvy vet to get them checked out :)

As the others have said if both eyes are the same it should be ok. My Tim had an abscess behind the eye and it was very obvious and only the one eye was affected. He was also struggling to eat.

Did Tim able to get abscess out behind his eye?

My ozzys eyes used to pop out like that when he was scared, when he got more comfortable and relaxed he stopped doing it :)
