My boy Harry has just been diagnosed with an abscess behind his eye but possibly tooth related as we had been going to the cat and rabbit clinic for dentals for 14 months now. He’s on Zithromax, loxicom and tramadol but after his first dose of antibiotic and tramadol yesterday he started to behave so strange and I don’t think the drugs agreed with him. I’m assuming it was the tramadol, he was zooming all around his enclosure, eyes bulging and looking really scared. It went in all night and I made the decision this morning to have him pts. Typically he ate his greens and seemed better this morning so now I’m unsure whether I need to let him have the course of antibiotics. The vet said if they don’t work he will have to have his eye removed and at 6 years old I’m wondering if all this intervention is too much and I should just let him go peacefully.

I’m sorry Harry is poorly. I’d give the antibiotics a go. Can you call the vets and ask their advice about the tramadol? Maybe he could have a smaller dose or a different painkiller? If he’s eating and is ok in himself I’d try the meds and see. Zithromax is a very good AB for abscesses. One step at a time.

Is he under the Cat and Rabbit for his eye or just his teeth? Has his teeth issues been resolved? Good luck.

Yes he’s under cat and rabbit for his abscess. They saw puss yesterday so are hopeful it was draining. His teeth are ongoing. We go once every 3 weeks to have the two spurs burred off. He has loxicom as a pain killer and to be honest I think that’s enough for him. I’m not giving him tramadol again. I really know my Harry and he’s usually so good at everything, we just get each other. I wish he could talk and tell me he’s had enough. I know because he’s 6 his time will come one day and today might be the day, it’s so hard to know because I really want him to have every chance but if his quality of life is poor then I feel I’m keeping him alive for my sake and not his.

Thank you. I think I got so carried away with pouring my heart out I lost the point of the reply to the other post. I wish animals could speak

Poor little Harry 😢 Larry had his eye removed at Cat and Rabbit but he was only a year old! I have to say it did go brilliantly and he was absolutely fine, but it wasn't due to an abscess and he was otherwise well.
It's such a difficult decision isn't it?
I'm inclined to keep going if they are still eating, but that's just me.
Personally I'd give them a call re the tramadol, and I'd keep going with the antibiotics and finish the course. As @weepweeps has said zithromax is a really good ab for abscesses.

Sadly we had to help Harry over the rainbow bridge this evening. He had developed gut stasis, I went to check on him and he had ballooned. We rushed him to the vets and he went peacefully. I’m heartbroken but I know all his health issues are over and he’s happy again with his two wives he’d already outlived.
