Hello,

I am looking to get a different cage for my two young guinea pigs. When I just had one alone, she had an open store bought cage, but I moved them to a wooden hutch for some more space when I got the second one. But, I don't think they actually like the hutch - both of them love it when I put them temporarily in the open cage when I'm cleaning out their hutch, so I'm thinking maybe they don't like being in a really closed off, dark environment?

I'm looking at all the different threads on here, but they are quite hard to read because I'm being introduced to a lot of new words I don't know, so I can't judge the difference between the cages. Could someone please explain to me what "c&c", "correx" and "ferplast" are?

Hi

Without meaning to advertise, click the link to see c&c cages http://www.candcguineapigcages.co.uk/ . I bought one ready measured from there because I am lazy but you can source correx (the plastic bit lining the bottom of c&c cages) from ebay as well as sign writing shops local to you as this is what house "for sale" signs etc are made on. You can also buy the grids on ebay I believe in order to make your own, custom c&c cage. I'm sure some savvy bargain hunters will point you in the direction of cheap grids and correx.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think Ferplast is just a brand of cage - I believe the indoor cages sold at Pets at Home for guinea pigs/rabbits are ferplast cages.

C&C cages are cages made from individual metal grids. Most are lined with correx/coroplast, which comes in quite a few colours. If you can, choose a C&C cage; C&C is much more adaptable, as you can add an upper story or change the size to suit your particular surroundings. The grids are 14 in and therefore allow a bigger cage than a comparable traditional cage. You can buy grid sets separately on places like ebay. Correx is available online or from a local sign making outfit. There are now a few ready-made cage providers.

Ferplast is a traditional cage brand; it is currently the best value for price and comes with two flaps that open at the front for easier access. http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/hutches_cages/guinea_pig_cages/120_cm_cages/14083

That makes a lot more sense now. C and c cages seem to be the favourite, and I wondered if they were made of something really guinea pig friendly, but now I know that it's because of the space. Thank you for the helpful links, I will have a look around and be ready come pay day :)

You can use the grids with any sort of base. Mine were sat on top of cardboard for a while bout now have wooden bases made by my OH - they enjoyed nibbling the cortex too much. You can get sheets of cortex off EBay or other sites btw.

PS: I use a lino offcut as base for my big floor pens; it easily wipeable.
