Boris has hyperthyroidism. He’s on thyronorm in ever increasing doses. His behaviour is improved - he’s more like his old self (less trotting round the cage and more lounging like he used to do). The rapid weight loss has stopped, and his vitals (heart rate and breathing rate) are improving; he’s no longer absolutely ravenous but there’s no weight gain. Each time the dose increases his weight plateaus, then he gains a few grams and then he loses a few more than he gained, and so it goes on in a downward trend. He’s been having top up feeds of Emeraid to help with the weight loss but the weight loss still continues. Just looking to see if this is others’ experience of hyperthyroidism and thyronorm.

I've no experience of this but sending you and Boris hugs. I hope he improves soon and becomes more stable.

I'm sorry to hear boris has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism,my late snowy was diagnosed with it too.Shed lost weight but was forever hungry and wolfed down every bit of food.Unfortunately I lost her only a month or so after she was started on thyronorm so I didn't see the benefits but I hope you see some improvement in Boris x

I’ve used Thyronorm with good success, but it took many months before there was any significant weight gain.
Thanks Debbie. He was diagnosed in April. I was hoping that his latest increase might have an effect but he’s still on a downward trajectory (just not as fast as he was in the beginning).

He’s currently on the dose for 2.0kg using the dosing syringe twice daily. I think that equates to 0.4ml twice daily

That’s a higher dose than I was giving. We started on 0.1ml twice daily and then increased to 0.15 ml and finally 0.2 ml twice daily. How was hyperthyroidism diagnosed? x
Blood tests in April - his T4 was off the scale. We’ve been increasing slowly and regularly since mid April.

I'm sorry I've only just caught up with this thread.i had Finley who kept losing weight,he was hyperactive ate loads.
Vet diagnosed hyperthyroidism.he started on 0.2mls ,he gradually gained some weight ,would then start to loose weight. In the end Finley was on 0.5mls daily,he gained 300grams....to 1.1kgs,though in his prime he was 1.3kgs.Finley lived for 2 years on this regime.unfortunatley died at 7 years of age with kidney disease, which had no corolation to the thyronorm.
I hope Boris gets stable eventually, just needs to find the correct dose of thyronorm to maintain his weight.poor Boris.

He would lose weight about every two months, then raised the dose until he maintained his final weight.the thyroid slowly starts malfunctioning ,until it halts at its last amount t stops. Then thyronorm takes over to compensate for the o reproduction of thyroxine.sometimes a thyroidectomy can be performed.

I know he wasn't a piggy, Elijah Snow mog had hyperthyroidism, his weight slowly dropped until he was all skin and bone. He wouldn't take his medication as he was a stubborn old man. It was heartbreaking to see a once big fluffy monster a shadow of his former self. In the end we discussed it with our vet, we both agreed it was the kindest thing to help him over the bridge.
This is before he got ill and shortly before we lost him. 😢 we now fear Pip has the same condition, they are full brother and sister from the same litter.

We can only do what we can do for our beloved fur babies. It’s heartbreaking Wishing we could do more. That was some dramatic weight loss for Elijah Snow. Thanks for sharing, Boss.
