Hiya. With the insurance company ExoticDirect, does anyone here use them? Good or bad reviews? I'm considering getting insurance for three pigs, but have seen people say they barely cover anything and others say they cover a ton.

Thanks. I had a live chat with ExoticDirect to ask questions

They were really helpful answering my questions and quick in getting someone to live chat

I think the trouble with any pet insurance is over the year. You may have paid £600 pounds & your pets are not ill, then that money with go straight in there pockets.
I think I would rather have a vet fund.

I think this is how it works ?

Premier - roughly £437 for three this year, insurance is not shared, 2000 for each one
Essential - roughly £324 for three this year, insurance shared between them

if you are able to afford insurance i think it is great if you have a small number of piggies, peace of mind.ive 20 piggies,it would be a lottery as to whom gets ill,who do you insure.i put aside 150 a month to my vet fund and this seems to cover most of my needs.the only xtras ive needed are for routine neutering.

I also put money aside, £100 a month for 4 pigs, but as they're all under 2 years I hopefully have time to save a decent amount for when they're older.

With one of my girls having an eye condition from birth it wouldn't be worth insuring her.

I have been with Exotic for the past 7 years - loads of claims - they are very quick - usually within a week - it is the vets who are slow to send off claim forms - Exotic have paid out over £5500 in the last 3 years with my pigs no problem - the way to look at insurance is I would not have been able to save enough money to cover their vets bills - a better way is by law you have to pay out for car insurance - if you don't have a car accident and don't make a claim, you don't go around moaning that it's a waste of money - you are just happy you haven't been in an accident - :sly:

Hi completely the same as Tan, been using them for about ten years after one of my piggies cost me Over £2,000 in one year in vet care. For me it's a means to protect them and peace of mind. I let the vets do all the tests they need to do and not worry. One poor girl I had had a big op then had to stay with the vets for ten days, that bill alone was £1,500. I find them incredibly helpful, sympathetic (I cry whenever one dies and I have to call them and they are so sympathetic!) and they pay up really quickly. I would never go without now.

I am sorry I can't agree with this, the money doesn't "go into their pockets" the money goes into a pot that potentially helps to pay out on a huge amount of claims from various people, including the claim you make if you need to.

I have used Exotic Direct & am still doing at the moment. They cover most things, except those mentioned in the chat & pre-existing conditions. If you start vet treatment before you take up a policy it is likely that condition will never be covered by it. I think you have to be insured for a couple of months before you can claim anything too. I have found they pay up very quickly & were an absolute godsend when I had my heart piggy, one bottle of her meds was £45. I definitely recommend you do insure if you can afford too, I spent almost £4,000 on one uninsured piggy so since then have insured all of my pigs, even for 3 it was about £30 a month back then, which is much cheaper than trying to put away £100-£150 a month away.

You have to be insured for 14 days before they pay out for illness (this stops people who think their pig might be starting to develop something and quickly insuring them so they can swerve a vet bill ) - but you are covered immediately for accidents - say if you drop your pig or it is attacked in the garby next door dog.

Totally agree with you Poppy's Mum. For many years I made a 'profit' i,e I got out far more than I paid in. OK now not so much (thank goodness) but they are a company and not a charity, they therefore need to be commercially viable. Secondly if they are not commercially viable they would not be able to pay out when you most need them and you'd see their service cut back.

In my mind its value for money, gives me peace of mind and means I can throw money at a problem without worrying about it.

How much do you think it would be to insure 6 piggies? I think I should get mine insured just in case

You can get a quote on their website.

You can either insure 3 pigs on one policy - in which case you will have 2 policies - or you can insure each pig individually.

I pay almost £50 for 3 guineapigs each are covered for £2000 x
That's really good I'm definitely going to take out an insurance for the piggies, I think it's well worth having because you never know what can happen and for them to be covered for £2000 each is really worth having. Thank you

It's the premium one :) the other one is £2000 between them x

I wish I could insure mine for peace of mind, but with 22 it would mean I'd be eating dirt! I have to put money aside every month. As long as no one gets ill for a couple of months I end up with a nice safety cushion. At least I have a lot of dirt to choose from if anything bad does happen

How can you tell who's who lol x

22! Omg! :yikes:

I wish I could insure my piggies, but I'm not allowed :(. I don't have the money for it either (I'm a broke teenager) as I don't get that much pocket money. I know my parents will pay out for the guineas when they need it though. I do have a savings account (which I'm not allowed access to until I'm 18 or something), which I would have no problem using for the piggies, but my parents want me to save it for when I'm older.

By forgetting less important stuff. Buying food, paying bills, birthdays. Family members names...
I get confused with 6 lol I always call Florence and Francis and Freddie the wrong names, my mum just calls all my girls Marjorie because she forgets all their names! I don't even have a guinea pig called Marjorie!:lol!:

I've just taken out insurance for my two one year old boars - £24 per month for 10 months, both insured for £2000 each (rather than £2000 per policy). It's got to be worth it in the long run...
