I've finally ordered everything I need for a C&C cage! Everything should be here on Thursday, so I wondered if any one has any tips and tricks that will smooth along the building process?

The biggest cage I can make for my 3 girlies is 2X4, which I'm aware is the minimum space required according to guineapigcages. I know that building a second level reduces the amount of floor space on the lower level, so would it be a good idea to build a 2X1 'balcony' or would this do more harm than good?

Thanks :)

I recently built a 2x3 for my guineas with a 2x1 loft and I found the following problems:

1. I had trouble getting them out when I needed them out (cage clean) as they kept scooting under the loft
2. The loft was a little bit "bouncy" and they didn't feel secure up there, therefore never used it
3. The ramp took up a lot of room I found, I used more grids around the side so they wouldn't fall out the side, this made it hard to get in to underneath the loft
4. One more area for me to clean

So in the end, I did away with the loft. But really, I don't think you'll find out if it's right for you and your pigs unless you try it, so that would be my advice.

Yeah, you should do a 2x1 balcony and put all their hay and food up their so the ground level is just for running around so they have more space.

i don't know what i'd do without my 2x1 loft on my 2x4 cage, it means downstairs is play and sleep time and then one or the other can go upstairs and eat in peace if the other one is having a mad 5 minuets downstairs running around ! haha.
Plus keeps the food away from flicking poops in the cage when running around !

Thanks everyone :)
Will probably give it a go and see what happens. I doubt they'll know how to use the ramp at first (just like the cuddle cups!) but I think I have enough wood knocking around to try.
How can I make the top level more stable? I saw a lady on youtube who used a broom handle sawed in half but I dont understand how it stayed up? @)
And twiams, I'm definitely stealing your idea of putting bunting around the cage muhah!

I just cut a broomhandle to size, 24" if I remember correctly, and placed it under the furthest join between the two floor grids of the loft. Gives plenty of support for the loft.
